Congratulations Dori and John!  This year’s recipients of the FBE’s “Outstanding Teacher” Award and the “S. Warren Farrell Award for Educational Excellence” for the Chenery Middle School, respectively, are Dori Pulizzi and John McLellan.  This program, sponsored by the FBE and Belmont Savings Bank, recognizes the extraordinary contributions made by teachers in the Belmont Public Schools.  I cannot think of two more worthy candidates!  Please consider joining Dori, John, their students, and their families on Tuesday, May 2nd @ 6:30pm in the CMS Auditorium and Cafeteria to celebrate these honors.

PTO Meeting Change: Please note that our next Chenery PTO Meeting has been changed to Wednesday, May 17th in the CMS Community Room.  The original date was Thursday, May 11th.  Despite the change of date, the start time will remain the same at 7:00pm.

MCAS Dates: We have almost completed our ELA tests (including make-ups).  An updated version of the entire test schedule is located at the end of this newsletter.

Class Placement: Although next year probably seems a long way off, here at Chenery we are already looking forward to 2017-2018.  Class placement is one of the most important things to you and your children during this time of transition, so we want to be certain that we are as thoughtful and thorough as possible.  Starting on Monday, May 1 and continuing through Wednesday, May 31 we will make available “Parent Placement Consideration Forms” in our main office.  They are not required to be completed by all parents, but if you have any special circumstances you would like us to know about before assigning your child to a teacher and a team please submit one for your child.  For the sake of convenience, all forms can be picked up and returned to the main office.  If you have any additional questions regarding placement, please contact me at school at 617-993-5800.

Save the Date: Planning time on the Cape, the Coast of Maine, Block Island or at any coastal destination this summer?  Join us for a special presentation on oceans and climate change and add a new element of discovery and meaning to your vacation.  On Wednesday, May 31, 2017 @ 7:00pm in the Chenery Auditorium the Chenery PTO will host Peter Shelley, Senior Counsel at the Conservation Law Foundation, to present on climate change.  This discussion will focus on the importance of oceans to life on the planet, the paradox of how they are, at the same time, very big and yet hold finite resources, and it will examine how humans understand and manage our oceans through science, poetry, law, photography, diving, fishing, and in countless other ways.  The talk will also consider the challenges we face in keeping our oceans healthy, including the ever-growing difficulties tied to climate change.  The presentation will emphasize how great humans are at solving problems when we are focused on doing so and examine what remediation is being explored.  This will be an interactive presentation with awe-inspiring visuals and a dynamic discussion with Mr. Shelley.  Don’t miss this important discussion of the impact of climate change and environmental stewardship on one of New England’s most precious resources: Our oceans!  Questions? Contact Madeline Fraser Cook, madelinefcook@gmail.com or Laurie Bufano, lakbufano@gmail.com

Last Day: At their most recent meeting, the Belmont School Committee formally voted on the last day of school for this 2016-2017 school year.   Provided no unforeseen circumstances require the closing of the Belmont Public Schools in May or June, the last day of school – an early release day for students – will be June 21st.

Author Festival: On Thursday, May 11th @ 3:00-6:00pm we will be holding our annual Author Festival and Book Fair.  This is an annual event and is a great way to support the Chenery Library and meet local authors!  This year’s authors include current (Theresa Milstein) and former (Jessica Garrett) Chenery teachers, as well as some nationally awarded artists.  We hope to see you there!

From Belmont’s Recycling Coordinator: The Butler School has decided to not have an electronic fundraiser but electronics will still be collected at the Town Yard.  Please click on this link for info:

Grade 5 Foreign Language Selection Form: Parents and guardians of 5th graders should use the link here: https://goo.gl/forms/Oj4FV3pzLLAQalc32 to access the Foreign Language Selection form for students who are entering 6th grade next school year.  On the language selection form, students will choose which 2 of the 4 offered languages (Chinese, French, Latin, or Spanish) they prefer to study for grades 6-8.  Due to various scheduling factors, we cannot guarantee that all students will receive their first choice language. Students should feel comfortable with both the first and second choice language that they choose since students may receive either. The students also learned that since all of the languages at the Chenery are taught at the beginner level, if they speak another language at home or have experience beyond the novice level with a language, they should choose a different language to study at Chenery. The language classes here will not appropriately match the language level and learning needs of the student.  We kindly ask that you submit the form no later than May 31, 2017.  If you have any questions about the Foreign Language Program or the language selection process, please do not hesitate to reach out to or Director of Foreign Language, Colleen Foley cfoley@belmont.k12.ma.us.

Parent Forum: On Tuesday, May 23rd 6:30-8:00pm in the Chenery Auditorium we will be hosting a presentation by Alexandra Chiu of the Department of Education’s Safe Schools Program entitled, “Gender Identity and Expression in the Classroom: Increasing Your Child's Social-Emotional Learning.”  How many genders are there really? What is gender expression and how do implicit gender biases in education potentially damage all students' learning experiences? Discover ways in which perspectives about gender identity are shifting in education and how the focus on this area of social emotional learning fosters an inclusive school community where all students will increase their potential.
