MCAS Dates: We have almost completed our Grade 8 round of ELA computer-based tests.  After the break we will complete the Grades 5, 6, and 7 ELA paper-based tests, before beginning Mathematics for each grade.  A revised version of the entire test schedule is located at the end of this newsletter, correcting a few typos that appeared in last week’s newsletter.

Thank you PTO: Many thanks to Heidi Sawyer and her army of volunteers for hosting the annual Teacher Appreciation Luncheon.  The food was delicious, the conversation lively, and the sentiment sincere.  Thank you Chenery PTO!

BASEC Parent Lecture Series: On April 11th the Belmont After School Enrichment Collaborative (BASEC) will be hosting another free parent lecture in the Burbank Elementary Cafetorium at 6:30-8:00pm.  Each year BASEC brings various experts to Belmont to talk about issues relating to child development.  The upcoming speaker, Zach Kerr of Safe Schools for LGBTQ Students, will be speaking on behalf of the state laws and policies supporting youth who have socially transitioned their gender.

Yearbooks: It is not too late to order a yearbook for the 2016-2017 school year.  You may purchase a yearbook online or you may reserve one by filling out a short Google form and sending the payment to school.  On April 21 at 2:30, we will be submitting our final order.  Yearbooks will cost $15.  The deadline to purchase or reserve a yearbook is April 21.  To reserve a yearbook and pay by check please complete the Google form link (https://goo.gl/forms/8YaKFwJd3HDvDFqE2) and have your child bring a check to his/her homeroom teacher or the mail check to:

From Belmont’s Recycling Coordinator: If you are starting your spring cleaning please remember that the DPW Recycle Day will take place Saturday, May 15th from 9:00am – 1:00pm, Town Yard (37 C St.)

·         Eyeglasses: The Belmont Lions Club will be collecting eyeglasses for donation.

·         Paper Shredding: Sponsored by Watertown Savings Bank.  There is a limit of 5 boxes.

·         Propane Tanks: 20 lbs or under, NO helium tanks.

·         Electronics: The Butler School is doing their annual electronics fundraiser at this time. Please contact them for questions.

Parent Forum: On Tuesday, May 23rd 6:30-8:00pm in the Chenery Auditorium we will be hosting a presentation by Alexandra Chiu of the Department of Education’s Safe Schools Program entitled, “Gender Identity and Expression in the Classroom: Increasing Your Child's Social-Emotional Learning.”  How many genders are there really? What is gender expression and how do implicit gender biases in education potentially damage all students' learning experiences? Discover ways in which perspectives about gender identity are shifting in education and how the focus on this area of social emotional learning fosters an inclusive school community where all students will increase their potential.
