MCAS Dates & Thoughts: MCAS season is upon us once again.  Starting next week, we will begin the process of testing all students in English Language Arts and Mathematics, and testing Grades 5 and 8 in Science, Technology, and Engineering.  Completing a testing sweep at a school as large as Chenery is no small feat; in total we will test 1359 students, on 10 separate subject tests, over 7132 total test sessions, in 21 total days!  This year Massachusetts has created a “MCAS 2.0,” which is being advertised as a combination of "old" MCAS and the PARCC test (the multi-state test which Belmont administered for the last two years).  The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is requiring all Grade 8 students to take the online version for ELA and Math.  All other students will continue to take the paper-based test.  They are hoping this Grade 8 test drive will give them more information as they move toward all students taking the online test in the next few years.  All students have 2 days of English Language Arts (except Grade 5, which has 3) and 2 days of Math. Grade 5 and 8 also have 2 days of Science.  Unlike PARCC, MCAS tests are not timed; some students might elect to work for 3 hours while others could be done in 45 minutes.

According to the Department of Education, the purpose of the MCAS is to "measure the academic achievement and progress of schools, districts and individual students."  As Chenery’s school leader, I feel compelled to remind everyone that there are many important things that these tests do not measure: Creativity, resilience, motivation, persistence, curiosity, endurance, reliability, enthusiasm, empathy, self-awareness, leadership, courage, sense of wonder, sense of beauty, honesty, and integrity.  We will continue to focus our efforts on those things for the other 169 days of our school year.

The entire test schedule is located at the end of this newsletter.

Becca Pizzi 5K Race: Please join us for the 2nd Annual Becca Pizzi Family Fun Run celebrating Becca Pizzi, a Belmont native and BHS alumna, as a World Marathon Challenge Champion conquering 7 Marathons on 7 Continents in 7 days.  Join us for the 5K and 1 Mile Run for kids on Sunday, April 30th at the Belmont High School Track.  The 5K race begins at 9:30am and the 1 Mile Kids Race begins at 9:00am.  In addition to the run join us for awards and giveaways.

Raising Resilient Kids: Please come to this year’s social and emotional learning presentation to learn about resilience, how to foster it at home, and how we’re fostering it in the schools. This presentation is part of the district’s social and emotional learning initiative, generously funded by the Foundation for Belmont Education. Choose the presentation that best fits your kids and/or your schedule.

Parent Forum: On Tuesday, May 23rd 6:30-8:00pm in the Chenery Auditorium we will be hosting a presentation by Alexandra Chiu of the Department of Education’s Safe Schools Program entitled, “Gender Identity and Expression in the Classroom: Increasing Your Child's Social-Emotional Learning.”   How many genders are there really? What is gender expression and how do implicit gender biases in education potentially damage all students' learning experiences? Discover ways in which perspectives about gender identity are shifting in education and how the focus on this area of social emotional learning fosters an inclusive school community where all students will increase their potential.
