Youth Risk Behavior Survey Administration

Apr 4

Dear Parent or Guardian,

In April, our school district will be participating in a youth risk behavior survey for grades 7 – 12.  This will be the third implementation of the survey within ten years.  This survey will gather information about the behaviors associated with the health and safety risks and protective factors for youth in Belmont.

The information collected by this survey will help educators working in Belmont improve school health education curriculum and programs aimed at preventing and reducing health risks among our youth.  The town has also used the data collected, to secure funding for schools, police, Board of Health and youth services.  The survey has the support of the Belmont School Administration, Belmont School Committee, Chenery PTO, High School PTO, Belmont Board of Health, Belmont Police Department and Massachusetts Secondary School Administrators’ Association.

Your child’s class will participate in the survey.  The paper and pencil survey is comprised of multiple choice questions and will take no more than 45 minutes to complete.  There are no physical tests or exams involved.  Your child’s participation in the survey is voluntary and anonymous; no names will be used or reported.  The survey will ask about tobacco, alcohol and other drug use activity; sexual behaviors, intentional and unintentional injuries, suicidality, electronic communications, eating habits and physical activity.

Valid results depend on high participation rate.  However, your child’s participation is entirely voluntary.  If you have questions regarding this survey or would like to preview the survey it is available at the Chenery Middle School nurse’s office and the High School guidance office.

Thank you for your cooperation with this effort.
