Extracurricular Activities At Chenery Middle School

Extracurricular activities are an important enhancement to the academic program at Chenery Middle School. Through these activities children have the opportunity to explore a variety of interests and develop their talents in different fields. There are several afterschool activity options for your child to participate in sponsored by Chenery Middle School and the PTO.  

Chenery Sponsored Activity Choices

Children are welcome to participate in one of more of these activities. Most activities kick off mid-to-end of September.

COMMUNITY SERVICE CLUB

Five meetings per year with Michael Williams 2:30-3:15. Open to all grades. Meets to organize and participate in community based projects.

UPPER SCHOOL MATH TEAM

Thursdays with Jonathan Golden 2:30-3:30 Room 317. Open to grades 7 & 8. Competes in the Intermediate Math League of Eastern Mass. There are five meets throughout the year where students compete against other schools.

LOWER SCHOOL MATH CLUB

Tuesdays with Catrina Knapp 2:30-3:15 Room 226. Open to grades 5 & 6. For math enthusiasts who enjoy solving interesting and challenging problems outside of school.

UPPER SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL

Thursdays with Leon Dyer 2:30-3:45 Open to grades 7 & 8. Students will have the chance to generate school spirit, plan fundraisers, and work on creative projects. Application required.

LOWER SCHOOL STUDENT COUNCIL

Thursdays with Carla Hawkins 2:30-3:45. Open to grades 5 & 6. Students will have the chance to generate school spirit, plan fundraisers, and work on creative projects. Application required.

CHEETAHZINE

3rd Friday of the month with Katharine Kelley 2:30-3:30. Cheetahzine is the school newspaper. Participation is limited to 16 students. Students must commit to attending all meetings and commit to completing some independent work (online).

CROSS COUNTRY

Mon., Tues., Thurs., Fri. with Alison Ruane and Peter Tausek Practices from 2:40-3:40 Meets from 2:40-6:00 Meet at the backstop of the softball field. Open to 7th & 8th graders. Students have the opportunity to compete against other schools.

COURTYARD CLUB

Tuesdays Fall and Spring with Ben Ligon 2:25-3:15 Meets in the courtyard. Open to all grades. Students are involved in a variety of gardening activities.

GAY-STRAIGHT ALLIANCE FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE

3rd Thursday of the month with Karen Duff 2:30- 3:30. Open to all grades.

YEARBOOK

Wednesdays with Evans Mondesir 2:30-3:30 in Mac Lab 115. Open to all grades. Students play an integral part in the planning of the Chenery yearbook.

NATIONAL HISTORY DAY CLUB

Twice a month on Thursdays with Suzanne Zmijewski 2:30-3:30 Room 202. Open to 8th graders who love history. Students must be willing to work outside the club. Sign up in room 329.

BEST BUDDIES

Twice a month on Wednesdays with Caroline Brown and LABBB Faculty 1:30-3:00 Large Community Room or Library. Open to all grades. Best Buddies is an international organization and fosters friends for students with disabilities. Chenery students have the opportunity to establish friendships and participate in activities with LABBB students.

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TEAM

Mondays with Joanne Marks, Nicole Nitchie and Jonathan Marks 2:30- 3:30 Room 324. Open to grades 6 – 8. Participants on the team will spend their time in and out of school preparing for a state competition in March. Students will practice lab skills, prepare for specific content tests and solve engineering problems.

LOWER SCHOOL THEATER WORKSHOP

Day TBD with William Stambaugh. Open to 5th & 6th graders. More information to follow.

JAZZ ENSEMBLE

Thursdays with Sharon Phipps 2:45-4:00 Auditorium. Open to all grades. By audition only More information to follow.

CHAMBER ORCHESTRA

Tuesdays with Margot Reavey 2:30-3:30 Auditorium. Open to all grades.

CHAMBER SINGERS

Tuesdays with Sarah Carson 2:30-3:30 Room 141. Open to grades 6 – 8.  An afterschool choral ensemble for boys and girls.

DOUBLE REED ENSEMBLE

Fridays with Sharon Phipps 2:30-3:15 Room 143. Open to oboes and bassoons in grades 5 – 8.

CHENERY WINDS

Mondays with Sharon Phipps and John McLellan 2:30-4:00 in the band room. By audition only.

FLUTE ENSEMBLE

Fridays with John McLellan 2:30-3:15 in the band room. Flutes in grades 5 – 8. No audition necessary.

BASKETBALL

Open to 7th & 8th grade girls and boys through tryouts. More information to follow.

Activities Choices Listing & Schedule 2017-18

Participation in any after school or evening activity requires that the student be in school on that day.

FEES: There is a one-time fee of $150.00 that covers your child’s participation in any of the Chenery sponsored afterschool activities that occur throughout the year. If your child is enrolled in the 5th grade music program and you have paid the $250 fee associated with that, it will also cover their participation in any of the above programs.

To register or apply for a fee waiver, print and fill out The Application Form. You may pay the activities fee with a check made out the Town of Belmont at the CMS main office or online here
