Atlas Adventures

Dear First Grade Music Geographers,

You have learned to read very well this year! Hooray! You have become fine geography detectives, too! Let's buddy up and have some investigation fun in class using your wonderful thinking and learning skills!

Working together with your learning buddy, locate and study the political maps for Europe in our class atlases. Remember, political maps have the names of the countries and many important cities on them. The countries are often shown in different colors so you can tell the country borders easily.

Step 1: Choose a country and put your finger on it.

Step 2: Give your learning buddy direction clues. Say North, South, East or West to help them solve your map mystery. You might say, " I am thinking of a country that is __________ of where I am pointing on the atlas map." Your learning buddy will use your detective clues and say, "The country is ______________."

Step 3: Take turns so you and your learning buddy are giving and receiving the atlas map reading clues. Have fun! Practice 3 or 4 times each.

Step 4: Now you are ready to locate the birthplaces of selected composers on the atlas maps! Working with your learning buddy, read the composers' names and birthplaces on this list then find them in the atlas. Check off each composer that you were able to locate.

Step 5: Take a good look at the list. What did you discover about the birthplaces of the composers? Were they the same from music period to music period?

Have Fun!

Love,

Ms.LaRoche
