An Exhibit to Enrich and Enjoy!

The month of March was extra special because there was an opportunity to share first grade artwork amongst classmates and the community. Learning is exciting and more meaningful when making connections with the visual arts and other disciplines.

Artists' work have influenced us along the way and we have used these works as an overview of our many art lessons taught so far. For example, when students created their imaginative/representative cat drawings, Marc Chagall's fantasy dream prints came in handy. The watercolor painting lesson titled "Looking to The Sky For Color" was presented with Vincent Van Gogh in mind. Author/Illustrator Eric Carle's many children's books were also made available to help us with our collage work.

The process of printmaking was reinforced and understood through the use of block prints for a cityscape scene. Students were also able to differentiate between a night sky with buildings, and a street or ground. Students created a fantasy "Under the Sea" picture with the use of texture prints.

Students produced abstractions with an exercise in tempera paint mixing. Primary colored paints were used to mix and make secondary ones. Many organic shapes were identified and discovered with this activity. A perfect opportunity to create repeat patterns using color, shape and line was given when it came time to designing  air balloons in their sky painting.

First graders proudly shared some of their experiences with this art exhibit, especially their many discoveries and creative thinking.

Much appreciation and thanks to these students and their families!

Sincerely,
