We took an imaginary trip to the beach via a jetpack. We were able to experience the tidal pools in the classroom. Under the seaweed we found snails, hermit crabs, clams, mussels, and starfish. We learned interesting facts such as starfish take six to eight hours to eat mussels, and snails grow their own shells while hermit crabs find theirs. Ask your children who was the surprise guest?
Belmont Municipal Light
Ms. Kristina Frizzell from the Belmont Municipal Light Department, came and spoke with our classes about electrical safety issues. During her presentation, she read and discussed the book, Aunt Sarah and the Amazing Power, an Electrical Safety Tale with the children. Please be sure to ask your children to tell you about what they learned from Ms. Frizzell. Every child received a copy of the book to bring home and share with their families, too. It's well worth reading and discussing together as a family.
Blue Hills Observatory
Mr. Don McCasland from the Blue Hill Observatory (www.bluehill.org) came and spoke about the science of weather forecasting with all of the first graders at Winn Brook. Weather is one of our areas of study this year and Don's talk was informative and a terrific introduction to our formal weather studies. Please be sure to ask your children to tell you all about what they learned about weather. Don asked that teachers pass along invitations for students and families to visit the Blue Hill Observatory, too!
