*"Rain Forest Rap"
Facilitators: Ms. Helene Tassone and Grade One Teachers.

I have loved music since I was a little girl. My dad played violin and was our church choir director. My three older siblings all played an instrument when they got into fourth grade so music was all around my house. When I got into the fourth grade, I chose the saxophone to play.

Throughout my high school education, saxophone was the instrument that I studied; playing Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophone. As a senior in high school I had decided I wanted to major in music when I went to college. I already had an older sister that was a "Music Major" and she told me that there were already too many saxophone players at the college and that I should switch to play the bassoon.

At the age of 17, I started taking lessons on the bassoon and have been playing it ever since. Throughout my high school and college career I always sang in the school choruses.

For our community sharing with the first grade, I taught the children how to compose a rap. We used the rain forest as our theme. The children became more confident with the relationship of beat and rhythm. The children imparted their knowledge of the rain forest in forming the text of our rap. I loved working  with the fabulous first grade staff.

*"Get the Beat with the Blues"
Facilitators: Mr. Rikki Razdan
(Emma Kelley's uncle) and Dave Vincent

Music has always been a big part of Rikki's life - his father (Emma's grandpa) was a professional violinist who toured Europe with an Indian Dance Troupe when he was in his 20's! Rikki started by playing the recorder in grade school and developed an interest in playing the clarinet at age 11. He played in a swing band at the Arlington Academy of Music and he was hooked! He has been playing saxophone and clarinet with the blues band called the "Megawatt Blues Crushers" for the past 7 years.

Rikki shared the following instruments with the Winn Brook 1st graders: his tenor saxophone, bass saxophone, clarinet and his recorder. He also asked his drummer, Dave, to bring in his drums as well! He demonstrated each instrument and played some blues tunes for the children.

Rikki attended the Winn Brook School as a child and is very excited to come back to his old school for a visit!

Dave Vincent started playing drums when he was 7 years old after a drummer came into his elementary school in Beverly, MA when he was in 1st grade! He's been playing ever since -- with broadways shows, in bands and has even played at the White House!  He currently plays drums with the blues band, the Megawatt Blues Crushers, and Johnny Car Wash, a band that plays surfing music.  Dave hopes that his visit to Winn Brook inspired a child or children to learn the drums and make music a part of their life!

*"Strumming and Drumming"
Facilitators: Mr. John Baboian,
Www.berklee.edu/faculty
Mr. Roger Brown (Gracie's dad) and
Mr. Danny Morris (Charles' dad)

John Baboian, Roger Brown and Danny Morris brought music to first graders again this year. They showed the children how a rhythm section works. Danny played the bass guitar, John played the electric guitar and Roger played a variety of drums. They let the children see first hand how different styles of music are created. Children got the chance to see if they could recognize familiar tunes and to see what sounds they could get out of the instruments.

Danny first learned to play the trumpet but fell in love with bass in college. He now teaches at the Berklee College of Music and has just released a new instructional video on how to put a band together and get ready to perform.

Roger has played in bands in Georgia, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Kenya, Sudan and Thailand and recently co-produced "Bright Spaces", an award-winning collection of children's music.

John's performing credits include concerts, clubs, television, and radio throughout the United States and Canada. His performance tours include Japan, Great Britain, Central America, and the former Soviet Union. John's recordings include First Time Out, String Vibrations, New Journey, and the Boston Big Band's After Dark and Everything Happens to Me. He is the Director of jazz programming for the Armenian Arts Alliance and is on the faculty of Berklee College of Music.

*Painted Lady Butterfly Study and Launch

Facilitators: Grade One Teachers

Winn Brook first grade children, families and teachers celebrate spring with a wonderful and exciting study of Painted Lady Butterflies! Through classroom investigations, the children observe, record and learn about the life cycle of the Painted Lady Butterfly from egg to larva (caterpillar) to pupa (chrysalis) to adult butterfly. The month long study culminates with each class launching the butterflies and setting them free.
