Statement of Purpose
"Daniel Butler is dedicated to providing a school community where students will acquire the foundational skills, knowledge, and behaviors needed for life-long learning. We believe that this can best be achieved in an environment characterized by mutual respect and shared responsibility. Our success will be built on a partnership of teachers who are committed to their profession and families who ensure that their children come to school prepared to learn."
Butler elementary school has a library/media center, a gymnasium, a cafeteria, music and art rooms, outdoor play structure, playing area and field. Computers are available in all classrooms and in the library/media center.
In addition to the basic curriculum, learning is enriched on a regular basis through special events and activities. The Arts and Enrichment Programs of the parent-teacher association sponsors:
- authors, and
- scientists in residence,
- marine biologists,
- opera performances,
- historical educators,
- dance companies, and
These programs supplement the curriculum. In addition, each class typically participates in at least one field trip each year. Parents may elect to have their child attend an Extended Day program for a fee. These programs are structured and supervised to include time for reading, homework, arts and crafts, sports, outdoor time, and other healthy activities.
A school calendar is sent home the first week of school and when new families register. School Calendar is also available on the school website.

Students should wait outside on the playground . Students should line up at their designated area by 8:35 and will enter the building at 8:40, as directed by the teachers. In the case of rain or very cold weather, students will wait in designated areas inside the building until school opens.
Half day kindergartners are dismissed at 11:55. Full day kindergarten students and all students in grades one through four are dismissed at 1:40/2:50. Parents wishing to have their child dismissed from school early must send a written request to the child’s classroom teacher. To minimize classroom interruption, they must report to the school office to pick up their child. Parents should sign the Dismissal Log in the school office, indicating the time they picked up their child. For the safety of our students, no child will be released from school early unless these procedures are followed.
Early Release and Curriculum Days
Each year, an annual calendar is adopted by the School Committee and distributed to parents in September. The annual calendar includes early release days and curriculum days for staff development and parent conferences. On early release days, students are dismissed at 11:40. There is After-Care, but no lunches are provided. Therefore, children in After-Care must bring a bag lunch with them to school on early release days.

Students who are at school for lunch have the option, on a daily basis, of bringing a lunch from home or purchasing it at school. Students may also purchase milk or sweet desserts separately. Lunch Menu is posted on the school web site.
There are four lunch periods (starting at 11:30 and ending at 1:20) of 35 minutes each. This includes eating time and 10-15 minutes of recess. During the 35 minutes of lunch and recess, lunch aides, who are the authorities at these times, supervise students.
At the discretion of the classroom teacher, students may have up to 15 minutes of outdoor morning recess, weather permitting. In addition, students in grades 1-4 have an outdoor recess for 10 or 15 minutes after eating lunch. If there are medical reasons for which a student cannot participate in outside recess, a note is required. Otherwise, if well enough to be in school, students are expected to go outside for recess.
