Kindness and Cooperation can put a Smile on your Face

The Student Handbook was developed by a committee composed of parents and teachers. It is based on the need to create and maintain a positive climate both in the school and on the playground. Our hope is that children will carry over from home those attitudes about good behavior which they have learned from their parents.

At Butler we feel that all students have three rights:

The right to an excellent elementary education.
The right to attend a school where all children are respected.
The right to a clean and safe school environment.

As is the case in every human community, each right rests on a set of individual responsibilities. Students have the responsibility to practice positive behavior when at school. The staff ensures students' rights by providing a motivating academic program and by reinforcing good behavior in an atmosphere of high expectations for all. Parents support our efforts by the warm encouragement and praise that they give for the efforts children make to work hard and behave well at school.

We believe that harmony within our school community can best be attained with the statement of clear and simple rules relating to both person and property. These rules apply to many different situations, in school and out. Underlying them is the expectation that our students will respect each other as well as all of the adults with whom they will work while at school.

The ultimate goal of any code of discipline is that children will grow up to be productive and contributing citizens of their community and country. We realize that children will make mistakes as they strive to achieve this end. By working with them and their families, we know that they will learn from their mistakes as they move toward responsible adulthood.

The rules in this Handbook will be fully explained to students by both teachers and principal. The environment we wish to maintain is one that is positive and supportive of all children. You are a great support to us in this endeavor. We ask that you read and discuss the rules with your children and that you join us in helping to establish a safe and positive school climate at Butler.
