Thank yous ...

The garden area under the library window is cleaned up and pretty! And the Gale Road flower bed has a fresh layer of mulch.

A big thank you to the cheerful Belmont Serves volunteers for their hard work, to Jessie Bennett for planning and executing, to Harriet Wong for bringing tools and snacks (and her kids who are great helpers!), and to the parent volunteers who showed up to help weed, clear, mulch and replant the area.

A special thanks to BASEC for providing funding for mulch and new plantings.

Katie Folts, Director of Education at Massachusetts Horticultural Society, will lead a workshop reviewing some basics of gardening in Massachusetts. She will share practical tips on garden-classroom management, review monthly garden tasks that can engage students, and highlight connections to Belmont's K-4 curriculum. Volunteers will gain practical tips for gardening with children and familiarity with the school gardens at Burbank.

The PTA’s Annual Appeal is off to a great start and we have met 66% of our goal of $30,000! Thank you to those who have already contributed! We are aiming for 100% participation to make our annual budget. Let’s keep the momentum going. Make a donation online at, or by sending a check in your child’s school folder. Donations can also be made in person at the PTA table during the Fall Social on 9/28). We ask you to contribute whatever you’re comfortable giving, and if you need a number, we suggest $125 PER CURRENT BURBANK CHILD.  Every bit helps, so please join us and give what you can.

Your contribution directly helps enrich your child’s school experience. Examples of past partnerships between the Burbank PTA and the Burbank school include teacher grants, SMART boards, classroom supplies, grade-level enrichment activities, “Mathbrary” for Grade 2, Colonial Day for Grade 3, Kindergarten field trips, online enrichment subscriptions for Grades K-4, community-building events, school library and classroom library support, and teacher professional development.

On September 28th the second graders investigated some incredible plants brought by the "Plantmobile," a visiting plant science program from Mass Horticultural Society. Mass Hort's Director of Education, Katie Folts, presented a program on Habitats and Ecosystems to the second grade classes to kick off their science curriculum.

After reviewing what plants need to grow and what makes a habitat, students observed several plants that grow in very different habitats - tropical, desert, forest, and wetland - and made a nature journal to record their observations. Working in groups, students thought about how a plant's shape or special features might help it to grow well in its habitat. They learned about some incredible plant adaptations, such as tropical plants with leaves shaped to shed excess rain water, and desert plants that store water inside their leaves and stems. Did you know that the pitcher plant traps and digests insects because it needs more nutrients than are available in wetland soils?

The second grade classes look forward to practicing their plant observation and nature journaling skills again when they visit the school gardens this fall.

Thank you to all the parent volunteers who came in to help the classes, to the Foundation for Belmont Education (FBE) for funding this visiting science program, and to Katie Folts of Mass Horticultural Society for an engaging science investigation.
