But first, a few announcements...

This Friday, December 8th, is a busy day at Burbank:

  • Burbank Book Fair – great books, tasty treats, crafts, AND a magic show! Volunteer to help at this fun event here.
  • Burbank Spirit Day – wear your spiritwear or Burbank blue & gold
  • Culmination of Annual Appeal Drive – give now, before it ends! Last minute contributions will be accepted at the PTA table during the Book Fair.

The Burbank Directory is complete and copies were sent home in backpacks last week (1 per family). If you did not receive one, please see Mrs. Sacca in the main office for a copy. Many thanks to Directory Co-Chairs, Sonia Gulbankian and Julie Sheffield, for their hard work!

The Burbank Walks Walk-It Ticket program ends this Wednesday, December 6th. Students who participated can trade in their Walk-It Tickets for a small prize. To do so, they should bring their ticket to Nurse Blake between Wednesday and Friday this week, or to the PTA Table at the Book Fair on Friday. Thank you to Burbank Walks Co-Chair Hyon-Jee Voigt for coordinating this fun, environmentally-friendly activity.

Help the Annual Appeal Finish Strong by Friday! Give Today!

Exciting news... we've reached our budgetary goal, a few days before the end of the drive on Friday! But let's not stop there. At 50%, our participation rate is still well shy of our goal of 100%.

Plus, if we raise extra, we can support new, amazing intiatives at Burbank. Last year extra funds raised supplied the school with 60 Chromebooks and 2 charge carts, which are being utilized by students in exciting ways. Here is one teacher's account:

"The fourth grade teachers of the Burbank school feel very fortunate to have Chromebooks to utilize in the classroom. These Chromebooks have enhanced our teaching and improved student learning across the curriculum. Last year, when we first received the Chromebooks, we put them to use right away. Students began working on their end of the year project, the infamous expert books. The end product was incredible... As students worked on their books using Google Docs, teachers were able to provide important comments during the editing and revising process which was ongoing and productive.

For the 2017-2018 school year, the fourth grade team will continue to use the Chromebooks throughout our writing curriculum. The teachers discovered that through Google Classroom they can share rubrics and exemplars that students can easily access and refer to during their writing process. We are also incorporating Chromebooks into math, reading, social studies, and science... It is our goal to have every student not only use Chromebooks everyday but also to be a part of Google Classroom which streamlines assignments, focuses on collaboration, and makes communication between teachers and students more meaningful and productive." — Mrs. Ames, 4th Grade Teacher

Help us finish strong and give what you can. Any amount helps to build our community and strengthen our school!

The Drive is Ending... Give Now!

PTA Committee Leadership Needed

If you can commit to take on a leadership role this year, the following committees are in urgent need of motivated people.

Landscape Committee

One co-chair needed to keep the Burbank grounds beautiful in fall and spring. The landscape committee co-chairs coordinate beautification and clean-up projects to keep our school accessible, safe, and pleasant for the entire Burbank community. This role will be particularly important when the modulars arrive and the landscape changes.

Burbank Walks

We are still looking for one co-chair to help promote walking/biking to school. The co-chairs will organize Walk to School Days (February & May); organize “walking school buses”; and promote pedestrian and bike safety. The fall walking programs are already underway, so new volunteers will work with current co-chairs to get walking/biking programs in place for spring.

Garden Classroom

We need at least one more co-chair to help maintain the beautiful Garden Classroom. This position involves managing the maintenance and development of the garden, as well as coordinating volunteer efforts in the garden, and collaborating with the Landscape, Veggie Garden, and Garden Curriculum co-chairs.

Green Team

One co-chair needed to re-establish the Burbank Green Team. This volunteer will work with the Green Team volunteers from the other Belmont schools and the community to promote environmentally-friendly initiatives.

If any of these roles interests you, please email Katherine or Seetha. The PTA is a completely volunteer run organization, and the positive impact felt by students, teachers, and our community is immeasurable. Thank you for giving of your time and talents!

STAR Awards – Thank a Teacher this Holiday Season

Looking for a way to thank a teacher or community member this holiday season?
How about a STAR or Friend Award?

With your $25 Award donation to the Foundation for Belmont Education, the FBE will send a STAR Award to your honored Belmont Public School teacher, staff member (i.e. teacher aides, school secretaries, custodians, crossing guards, etc.), or a Friend Award to a community member, with your name and personal message. This is a great opportunity to tell the people who enrich the lives of your children and your community just how much they are appreciated.

To ensure delivery before schools close for the winter break, please place your Award order by Tuesday, December 12th at:
