But first, a few notes...
Students collected more than $1,500 for UNICEF this year as part of the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF program! Thank you to the Social Action Committee for organizing it. The class award for highest level of participation this year goes to Ms. Normile's 2nd grade class – keep an eye out for their picture with Dr. Clifford in the Belmont Citizen Herald. Thank you to all the students who participated!
It's Spiritwear time! Orders are due Wednesday, November 22nd (no exceptions) – use the paper form your child brought home or order online at Cheddar Up. Questions? Ask Cathy Meyer or Jessie Bennett.
For those who have been wondering, the Burbank Directory will be coming soon. Many thanks to Directory Co-Chairs, Sonia Gulbankian and Julie Sheffield, who worked hard to collect, organize, and proofread the directory, and are now working with the printer to get them distributed ASAP!
Finally, thank you to Dr. Clifford and Jeff Forti for making time to present about the SEL Open Circle curriculum to parents at the PTA meeting yesterday. A summary of their presentation is below.
Contribute now and break the 90/40 ratio in our Annual Appeal!
We are excited to report that the Annual Appeal Drive might be short and sweet this year! Thanks to generous giving by 40% of families, we have raised more than 90% of the PTA budget, which directly benefits our school and children. To the 60% who haven't gotten around to giving yet, we invite you to join in! We would love to reach 100% budget with 100% participation. Will you give $5, $25, $125, or any amount you're comfortable with, to make up the remaining ground?
Help us reach 100% BUDGET
with 100% PARTICIPATION!
Online payment option include credit card (fee of 3.5% + $0.45) or e-check ($0.45 fee). You can also donate by check, made payable to "Burbank PTA" and submitted to your child's teacher.

PTA Meeting SEL Presentation: Summary and Home Connections
Dr. Clifford and Jeff Forti shared how the Burbank school uses the Open Circle Curriculum to foster our children's social-emotional learning. Jeff Forti explained that students must feel understood and emotionally safe in school to do their best learning. Dr. Clifford presented a Power Point showing the structure of the curriculum. Open Circle focuses on 5 Core Competencies: Self Awareness, Self Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making. Dr. Clifford explained that the curriculum spirals, meaning that the curriculm covers the same topics year after year, getting progessively more indepth and advanced at each grade level. Meeting participants were able to review binders with the grade-level Open Circle materials used by the teachers. Dr. Clifford shared that the curriculum includes Home Link materials that teachers can send home and encouraged interested parents to request it from the classroom teacher. Jeff Forti shared a handout "The Key Jar: 48 Questions to Ask Your Kids" which are conversation starters for parents to use to engage their children and encourage communication.
Presentation Home Connections:
- Open Circle Home Link materials – please contact your child's teacher to request
- "The Key Jar: 48 Questions to Ask Your Kids" – will be coming by email from your room parents

PTA Volunteers Needed
If you can commit to take on a leadership role this year, the following committees are in urgent need of motivated people.
We are still looking for one co-chair to help promote walking/biking to school. The co-chairs will organize Walk to School Days (February & May); organize “walking school buses”; and promote pedestrian and bike safety. The fall walking programs are already underway, so new volunteers will work with current co-chairs to get walking/biking programs in place for spring.
We need at least one more co-chair to help maintain the beautiful Garden Classroom. This position involves managing the maintenance and development of the garden, as well as coordinating volunteer efforts in the garden, and collaborating with the Landscape, Veggie Garden, and Garden Curriculum co-chairs.
Two co-chairs needed to re-establish the Burbank Green Team. These volunteers will work with the Green Team volunteers from the other Belmont schools and the community to promote environmentally-friendly initiatives.
If any of these roles interests you, please email Katherine or Seetha. The PTA is a completely volunteer run organization, and the positive impact felt by students, teachers, and our community is immeasurable. Thank you for giving of your time and talents!
