What's Happening This Week

New Parking & Traffic Rules Start in September

There are big changes to the drop-off and pick-up procedures this year. Please review this pamphlet to familiarize yourself with the details before school starts. Dr. Clifford has requested that the PTA recruit parent volunteers to help provide guidance during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times during the first two weeks of school. If you can help, please sign up here.

Three New Teachers Join the Burbank Staff

Melissa Chalmers: Kindergarten

1. Who was your favorite teacher? Why?

I had an amazing 1st grade teacher named Mrs. Egurine. Every year, she would read The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams to her class. We had a stuffed rabbit in our classroom that we each got to take turns bringing home throughout the year. During the last week of school, we came back to the classroom to find that our stuffed rabbit had been replaced by a real bunny just like in the story! I still remember how magical I thought that was. After that, reading became such a fun and exciting adventure. My teacher brought the joys of reading to life and I hope to pass that love down to my students as well.

2. What are you looking forward to this year?

I am looking forward to being a part of the Burbank community! I have heard such wonderful things about the teachers, families and students in our school and I cannot wait to get to know everyone. I am also so excited to meet my new students! I hope they like to dance because I just love a good dance party!

3. What do you like to do when you are not teaching?

My husband, Matt and I are big foodies! We love trying new restaurants and cooking different recipes at home. To balance out all that eating, I like to go for runs and do yoga. We are also big football fans in my house! Fall is not only back to school time, it's football time! Over the summer, we spend a lot of time down the Cape with our family. We do a lot of reading at the beach and (of course) eating lobster rolls!

4. What is your experience working with children?

This is my first year teaching in Belmont, but my fifth year teaching kindergarten students.

Kaitlyn Talbot: Kindergarten

1. Who was your favorite teacher? Why?

My favorite teacher was my second grade teacher Miss McKay. She was so kind and she got to know all of her students really well. She was always so fun and so energetic. She was such a great role model to me and she inspired me to become a teacher just like her!

2. What are you looking forward to this year?

I look forward to meeting all of my students and getting to know them and their families. I already know that we are going to have a fantastic year!

3. What do you like to do when you are not teaching?

When I am not teaching, I like to spend my time outdoors. I love to go for walks with my dog or relax at the park or the beach.

4. What is your experience working with children?

I studied Early Childhood Education at Wheelock College and Moderate Disabilities at Merrimack College. Last year, I taught Kindergarten at a charter school in Everett, but I also have experience teaching at public schools in Lynnfield and Boston.

Elise Stoppel, Third Grade

1. Who was your favorite teacher? Why?

My favorite teacher was my fourth grade teacher because she wove her love of the Alaskan Iditarod and sheepdogs into the community of our classroom and through all her teaching!

2. What are you looking forward to this year?

I am most looking forward to getting to know each individual student in my class. Their passions and what makes them excited about school, while sharing with them my joy, enthusiasm, and passion for teaching!

3. What do you like to do when you are not teaching?

When I am not teaching I like to going kayaking in my backyard with my two daughters, Lily 7 and Farrah 5.

4. What is your experience working with children?

I have lots of experience working with children. While raising my own children, I have been working in Wayland as a Special Education Teaching Assistant. This is also my 3rd year working at the LINX Day Camp In Wellesley. Currently working as the Science Coordinator in our STEAM camp at the Dana Hall and Regis College Campuses in grades Kindergarten-8th.

PTA Board for 2017-2018

The PTA membership approved our new board at the final meeting of the year. This year's board members are as follows:

  • Katherine Poulin-Kerstien, Co-President
  • Seetha Burtner, Co-President
  • Jessie Bennett, Secretary
  • Hyon-Jee Voigt, Treasurer

Still in Need of Key PTA Co-Chairs

If you can commit to take on a leadership role next year, the following committees are in urgent need of motivated people to step up.

We need two more co-chairs to help with this great before-school program that gets kids moving. The co-chairs will coordinate with Katie Crow (Burbank's PE teacher and BOKS Lead Trainer), manage volunteers, and assist as needed during classes.

Garden Classroom

We need at least one more co-chair to help maintain the beautiful Garden Classroom. This position involves managing the maintenance and development of the garden, as well as coordinating volunteer efforts in the garden, and collaborating with the Landscape, Veggie Garden, and Garden Curriculum co-chairs.

Geography Challenge

We need at least one more co-chair to help out with the Geography Challenge, a tradition at Burbank for over 20 years. Even with increased enrollment over the last several years, the Geography Challenge has welcomed every child who wants to participate. This event will take place at the end of March.

If any of these roles interests you, please email Katherine or Seetha. The PTA is a completely volunteer run organization, and the positive impact felt by students, teachers, and our community is immeasurable. Thank you for giving of your time and talents!
