What's Happening This Week

Huge thank yous to Katie Crow; parent co-chairs Jill Callanan, Jim Mayall, Jim Reilly, and Krasi Chervenkova; and all of the volunteers who made Field Day a day filled with fun for Burbank students.

All PTA activities, including Field Day, are volunteer-powered. That means that without the involvement of families, nothing happens: no events, no enrichments, no building of community, no gardens. And on that note, we need to ask you for help.

Urgent call for Co-Chairs for 2016-2017

The amazing thing about Burbank's volunteers is that we have a fairly wide base of involvement, and many hands do indeed make lighter work. But the nature of being an organization that relies on family involvement is that people move on when their kids do, so we always need more hands to help out. If you can commit to take on a leadership role next year, the following committees are in urgent need of motivated people to step up.

Book Fair

The Burbank Book Fair raises money specifically for library purchases. It is also a chance to celebrate reading. When you see the excitement on the students' faces over seeing half the gym filled with books, you know that the event is important to the community. Unfortunately, we have had turnover in the leadership of this event over the last couple of years and are in need of new volunteers to make it happen. We need at least two more co-chairs to organize volunteers, do publicity, and coordinate setup and decorations.

Landscaping Committee

The Landscaping Committee organizes the fall and spring cleanups of the school grounds. Their invaluable work keeps our gardens and grounds beautiful, and they are also who we have to thank for keeping the playground wood chips stocked. We need at least one more co-chair to help run this committee.

Multicultural Fair

The Multicultural Fair celebrates the many places and traditions special to the Burbank community. We need a minimum of two co-chairs to organize this April event showcasing cultures from around the world; recruit volunteers to host booths; and organize a live talent show. This is the perfect event for motivated party planners who love the vibrant and diverse community we have at our school!

Field Day

We need at least one more co-chair to step into a leadership role for this beloved one day event next year. Help organize the volunteers, orders some Italian Ice, and support Katie Crow in running the games, and you'll be helping make one of Burbank's favorite events a reality.

If any of these roles interests you, this list has a brief description of each co-chair position. Use the form attached to the list or the online form to let us know how you might like to get involved.

Expressing interest now does not commit you - if you let us know you are interested, we will give you more information. You can decide whether to take it on once you know what the commitment entails.

The PTA is a completely volunteer run organization, and the positive impact felt by students, teachers, and our community is immeasurable. Thank you for giving of your time and talents!

Volunteer Today!

Spring Garden Party
Friday, June 9th, 3:00-4:00 pm

Join us after dismissal on Friday June 9th (rain date June 16, 3-4pm) for a fun celebration of spring and Burbank’s gardens and grounds.

At 3pm we will gather between the Garden Classroom and playground to honor Mrs Hogan, retired 1st grade teacher, with the Buddy Bench in her name. We will also surprise Mrs. Moeller, retiring 1st grade teacher, with a gift to the school in her honor! Come greet and thank these special teachers for their many years of dedication to our children!

Students and families will follow a scavenger hunt trail between various fun activities around the school grounds. If they find a hidden gnome along the way, they win a prize!

  • Learn about insects with nature experts from Habitat
  • Discover herbs in the Garden Classroom
  • Tour the vegetable garden and see what can you spot
  • Help pollinators by planting wildflower seeds on the bank
  • Dance around the maypole
  • Chalk the walk by the front steps
  • Have a popsicle on the front lawn; bring a blanket and picnic snack if you wish

Siblings, grandparents, and caregivers are welcome! Children should be accompanied by an adult. Students staying for BASEC after school will attend the Garden Party, unless they are enrolled in a BASEC Workshop on Fridays.

Volunteers Needed for Spring Garden Party
Friday, June 9th, 3:00-4:00 pm

Volunteers needed! Adults, please sign up online if you can help out with set up, activities, refreshments, or clean up. We also need 10 responsible middle or high schoolers to set up and run the scavenger hunt (community service credit). Click Here to Help with Garden Party

Questions? Please contact Garden Party Co-Chairs Lori Anderson (Lori02139@yahoo.com) or Harriet Wong (hiwong@post.harvard.edu).

Join the Fun of Walking Wednesdays

Photo

Leave the car behind (or park further away) and enjoy walking, biking, or scootering to school each and every Wednesday this spring. Sneaker Trophies will be awarded each Wednesday to the classes with the highest number of students walking/biking/scootering to school. Last week, our Sneaker Trophy winners were:

  • Kindergarten: Johnston 83%
  • 1-2: Wollner 95%
  • 3-4: Pierson 91%

Happy spring!

Help Burbank's Gardens Grow!

Volunteers are needed to help care for the gardens this spring! Sign up for a weekend or two this spring to water the seedlings in the vegetable gardens or the plantings in the Garden Classroom, and to help keep the weeds at bay. Regular spring watering will help protect our lovely gardens against summer heat! No experience necessary, and Garden Committee members are happy to show you what to do. Please pick a weekend or two in May-June; you can tend the garden any time Saturday or Sunday as suits your family's schedule.

SUMMER Garden Tending

Could your family look after one of the school gardens for a week this summer? Hot dry summers are hard on the gardens and we rely on volunteers to keep them green and growing through the fall. Tending the gardens is a fun way to involve your kids in helping care for their school. Plus you get to pick and eat what is ready to harvest in the vegetable garden! If you are new to the gardens we'll show you what to do; no gardening expertise required! Watering and light weeding can be done mornings or evenings, a few times during the week depending on the weather. Please sign up for a week (or two) to fit your summer schedule.

Kids Triathlon New England 2017 - for kids 6 and up!

The 6th annual New England Kids Triathlon will be held at the MIT campus on July 16th. This is the 3rd year a group of Belmont kids are teaming up as Belmont Super to race and raise money for the Foundation for Belmont Education (FBE). Last year team Belmont Super raised over $1000 for the FBE and this year we are trying to repeat the feat! If your kids are interested, register at: www.kidstriathloninc.org/register-new-england.html. Remember to use the team name "Belmont Super" when you register, so the FBE gets the $10 donation for your participation.

To help the kids prepare for the race, there are 6 free training sessions under the direction of professional triathlon coach (2 for swimming, 2 for biking and 2 for running) through the Belmont Recreation Department. The first training session starts at June 1st, so sign up soon! Details about the training and registration can be found at: www.belmont-ma.gov/recreation-division/pages/kids-triathlon-competition-and-training. In addition, there will be a post-race celebration party including food, drinks, and lots of fun games. It’s fun to practice, race and volunteer with friends, so get your friends to sign up with you!

If you have any questions, feel free to email: contact@bcaa-ma.org.
