What's Happening This Week

Tomorrow (Wednesday, May 24th) is Restaurant Day at My Other Kitchen in Belmont. Flyers with more information will be coming home in backpacks today - remember to bring the flyer with you when you go tomorrow so Burbank gets credit for your purchase.

Thank you to Katie Sbay and Burbank PE Teacher Katie Crow for organizing a terrific Community Fun Run last week. Over 200 students participated, raising $844 for the Martin Richard Foundation and Boston Children’s Hospital!

Have a great week!

Make a big impact, with a time commitment that works for you… Be a PTA Committee or Event Co-Chair!

Share your time and talents to enhance the Burbank community. The PTA is building the slate of committee and event chairs for the 2017-2018 school year. This list has a brief description of each co-chair position. Use the form attached to the list or the online form to let us know how you might like to get involved. Expressing interest now does not commit you - if you let us know you are interested, we will give you more information. You can decide whether to take it on once you know what the commitment entails.

The PTA is a completely volunteer run organization, and the positive impact felt by students, teachers, and our community is immeasurable. Thank you for giving of your time and talents!

Join the Fun of Walking Wednesdays

Leave the car behind (or park further away) and enjoy walking, biking, or scootering to school each and every Wednesday this spring. Sneaker Trophies will be awarded each Wednesday to the classes with the highest number of students walking/biking/scootering to school. Last week the average participation by class was 71%! Keep up the good work!

Happy spring!

Update on Elementary Modulars

We appreciate all the feedback and suggestions regarding the potential addition of modular classrooms at Burbank. Importantly, the Belmont Public Schools adminstration has listened to your ideas and is responding. Plans for a bus/parking lane in the front of the school are off the table for now and options are being explored to maximize and improve playspace.

Here is some information about the timeline for elementary school modulars:

  • A Space Task Force Committee was formed this year to review class size and enrollment at the elementary level and has recommended the addition of 4 modular classrooms to either Burbank or Butler to quickly address these issues. The school that receives the modulars would then have 4 classes at each grade level, K-4.
  • The School Committee will make a decision in June regarding the site for modulars.
  • The request for modulars will have to be approved by the Board of Selectmen before going to Town Meeting for a vote for funding this fall.
  • The goal is to have the modulars in place for the start of the 2018-19 school year.
  • The administration will continue to communicate with parents about the decision-making process and seek out input from the stakeholders. Please continue to share your suggestions with the Burbank PTA Leadership and Safe Routes to School Committee, with Dr. Clifford, and with the BPS Administration.

Help Burbank's Gardens Grow!

Volunteers are needed to help care for the gardens this spring! Sign up for a weekend or two this spring to water the seedlings in the vegetable gardens or the plantings in the Garden Classroom, and to help keep the weeds at bay. Regular spring watering will help protect our lovely gardens against summer heat! No experience necessary, and Garden Committee members are happy to show you what to do. Please pick a weekend or two in May-June; you can tend the garden any time Saturday or Sunday as suits your family's schedule. Sign Up for Spring Garden Care

SUMMER Garden Tending

Could your family look after one of the school gardens for a week this summer? Hot dry summers are hard on the gardens and we rely on volunteers to keep them green and growing through the fall. Tending the gardens is a fun way to involve your kids in helping care for their school. Plus you get to pick and eat what is ready to harvest in the vegetable garden! If you are new to the gardens we'll show you what to do; no gardening expertise required! Watering and light weeding can be done mornings or evenings, a few times during the week depending on the weather. Please sign up for a week (or two) to fit your summer schedule.

Enrichment Activities Update

The following activities were made possible by your donations to the PTA. Thank you to the Enrichment Committee for organizing these and other great events throughout the year.

Kindergartners Build Bridges

The Kindergarten classes recently had the opportunity to experience the Museum of Science "Bridges Workshop." The workshop featured hands-on engineering activities. Working in small groups, they built small bridges over a river, and then each class collaborated to build a bigger bridge that they could walk over!

Marionette Show for Kindergartners & 1st Graders

Last week the Kindergarten and 1st grade classes were treated to a wonderful and lively performance of "The Dragon King" by the Tanglewood Marionettes. Two puppeteers used beautiful hand-crafted marionettes and a colorful, changing set to tell the tale of an underwater journey based on Chinese folklore. Following the show, the students were given a behind-the-scenes tour of the set and an upclose look at the marionettes.

4th Graders Meet Local Beekeeper

Last week, the 4th grade classes enjoyed a Honeybee Presentation by local beekeeper Birgit deWeerd. She mesmerized the students with her discussion of the social structure of the bee colonies and the critically important role of bees pollinating plants and making honey. She told students how to distinguish between honey bees and wasps. This was the 13th year that Mrs. deWeerd has presented to Burbank 4th graders and it continues to be a favorite for both teachers and students.

GUEST SPEAKER, Peter Shelley, Senior Counsel, Conservation Law Foundation May 31, 7:00 pm Chenery Auditorium

Planning time on the Cape, the Coast of Maine, Block Island or at any coastal destination this summer? Join us for a special presentation on oceans and climate change and add a new element of discovery and meaning to your vacation. This discussion will focus on the importance of oceans to life on the planet, the paradox of how they are, at the same time, very big and yet hold finite resources, and it will examine how humans understand and manage our oceans through science, poetry, law, photography, diving, fishing, and in countless other ways. The talk will also consider the challenges we face in keeping our oceans healthy, including the ever-growing difficulties tied to climate change. The presentation will emphasize how great humans are at solving problems when we are focused on doing so and examine what remediation is being explored.

This will be an interactive presentation with awe-inspiring visuals and a dynamic discussion with Mr. Shelley. Don’t miss this important discussion of the impact of climate change and environmental stewardship on one of New England’s most precious resources, our oceans!
