Make a night of it and shop locally to support Belmont's Elementary Schools. This Thursday evening, many of the shops in Belmont Center will donate 15% of their proceeds to the elementary schools. Look for a flyer with more information to come home in backpacks this week.

MA Walk/Bike to School Day
Wednesday, May 3rd

Leave the car behind (or park further away) and enjoy walking, biking, or scootering to school on May 3rd. Students are encouraged to wear Burbank spirit wear or colors (blue/purple and yellow/gold), to look out for the Celebrity Walkers, and join a celebration on the blacktop.

Walk/Bike to School Day kicks off our spring season of Walking Wednesdays, and the return of Burbank's Sneaker Trophy contest! Sneaker Trophies will be awarded each Wednesday to the classes with the highest number of students walking/biking/scootering to school.

Walking School Bus groups will also resume on May 3, and walk together every Wednesday morning through June. To learn more about the Walking School Buses and how to join, see the Burbank Walks page of the PTA website, and follow this link for a Walking School Bus parental consent form:

Garden News

The Gardens are blooming! Spend a few minutes with your child exploring the gardens to look for blossoms, blooms, shoots, and other signs of spring. The gardens are always open to all!

The PTA Gardens Committee is planning for spring gardening activities that are linked to the curriculum. With guidance from Dr. Clifford and the District's Elementary Science Facilitator, we are working with teachers to plan garden activities for each grade level that will reinforce concepts and standards in science as well as other subject areas. The goal is for all students to experience hands-on learning through investigations of soil, seeds, roots, shoots, flowers, insects.... And for students to enjoy helping the school gardens grow!

To enable classes to bring their learning outside to the gardens, we will need helping hands!

If you would enjoy helping students with garden activities during the school day, please contact the Garden-Curriculum Liaison for your child's grade: Kindergarten - Kim Foster; 1st grade - Heather Barr; 2nd grade - Harriet Wong; 3rd grade - Jeanne Caldwell; 4th grade - Julia Coelho.

In addition, there will be various opportunities for parents/families to get involved and lend a hand this spring and summer. No expertise is needed! Please watch this newsletter and emails from your class room parents for easy and fun ways to help, such as:

  • come help tidy up the Burbank grounds and gardens on Spring Cleanup Day, Sunday afternoon May 7
  • help water the school gardens in spring (training provided)
  • come with your child/ren and be Garden Helpers before or after school - days/times TBD
  • sign up to tend the school gardens for one week during summer break (training provided)

Please watch the PTA News for further details and sign-ups.

Thanks for supporting the Burbank Gardens, and happy spring! Burbank Gardens Committee, Heather Barr, Kim Foster, and Harriet Wong.
