What's Happening This Week

This evening, the Belmont After School Enrichment Collaborative (BASEC) will be hosting another free parent lecture in the Burbank Elementary Cafetorium at 6:30-8:00pm. Each year BASEC brings various experts to Belmont to talk about issues relating to child development. The upcoming speaker, Zach Kerr of Safe Schools for LGBTQ Students, will be speaking on behalf of the state laws and policies supporting youth who have socially transitioned their gender.

Have a great week!

Thanks for another great Talent Show!

A standing ovation for our Talent Show co-chairs— Anne-Louise Klaus, Marin Mayall, Urmi Samadar, Jesse Souweine, and Susan Thomas— for organizing a fantastic and entertaining evening on Friday. Thank you also to Kabir Sen, Gaia Giudicelli, Bill Filler, Rich Preston, and Martin Guentert for their help in preparing for and running the show. Special thanks to Cliff Gallant for being our emcee for the evening, and to all the parents and students who volunteered their time at the event. Finally, thank you to all of the talented students who developed and rehearsed their routines and performed for an enthusiastic audience. Burbank certainly has lots of talented kids!

Enrichments Update

The Burbank Kindergarten classes had a wonderful presentation from the Perkins School for the Blind on April 6th. Jaimi Lard, a person who was born deaf and blind, had her interpreter Christine Dwyer translate her presentation. Through a combination of slides and videos the children were able to see how Jaimi lives in her home, goes to the gym and grocery store. It was a nice complement to the kids learning about the senses in the classroom. This was made possible by your donations to the PTA and organized by the Enrichment Committee.

Upcoming Events

April 17-21: April Break (no school)

April 27 & 28: No Kindergarten

April 27: Belmont Shopping Night

PMC Kids Ride - Registration Open

Calling all kids ages 3-12! Join your friends and neighbors at Belmont's Pan Mass Challenge for Kids Ride on Sunday, May 21st, at Belmont Hill School from 11:00 am-2:00 pm (but come late or leave early if needed), which will raise money for the Jimmy Fund at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Trikes, big wheels and training wheels are allowed on the "Tot Lot” loop (and can have help from parents if needed), which will take place in the parking lot of the Belmont Hill School campus. Those without training wheels can head out on the "Adventure Loop" (1 mile route guided by volunteers). Children can do as little as one loop or as many as they can fit in an hour. After the ride there are free refreshments, music, bouncy houses, face painting and other fun activities, including a visit from Pat the Patriot!

For more general information about registration, route options, and the post-ride party, see: http://www.kids.pmc.org/belmont.aspx.

You can ride alone, as a family, put together your own team, or join the "Belmont Bikers" team, which is made up of children from the Belmont Elementary Schools. The Yawkee Way store is donating $20 gift cards to all registered riders again this year!

If you are thirteen or older, come join the fun as a volunteer! Click on "register to volunteer" to help with anything from assisting riders on the courses to face painting. Parents, this also great opportunity to cheer your rider on from the route!

Feel free to contact Breda or Jim Zimkus (bzimkus@outlook.com; jzimkus@gmail.com) with any questions that you may have.

Belmont is Raining Poetry - Submit a Poem!

Belmont elementary students are invited to submit a poem to Belmont Raining Poetry, a new project celebrating art and safe routes to schools. Five poems will be selected to be temporarily installed on sidewalks using Mass Poetry’s unique formula which is only visible in the rain. Our puddle-tastic spring theme is inspired by e. e. cummings’s poem “In Just-“ – a testimony to childhood and springtime - and by poet-judge, Matthew J. Burgess, author of Enormous Smallness: A Story of E. E. Cummings.

Submit By: Fri., April 14th by 3:00 p.m.
Entry Form: www.BelmontRainingPoetry.com

Need inspiration? Find Matthew’s lesson guide on our site! Winning poems will be announced in late April!

This project is supported by a grant from the Belmont Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Contact Organizer: Kate Bowen at belmontrainingpoetry@gmail.com.
