What's Happening This Week

Happy spring! As we start to shake off winter and welcome the new season, take a moment every now and again to observe the changes taking place in Burbank's lovely gardens - they are always open to all!

The Geography Challenge is this Thursday and Friday. We still need a few volunteers, especially with setup on both days and the transition on Thursday from the K/1st graders to the 2nd graders. Please sign up here.

Have a great week,

Jessie and Katherine

Second Graders Lift Their Teachers

Photo

The second graders accepted the challenge and experimented with classical physics principles to lift their teachers off the ground. The students learned about levers, fulcrums, torque, and mechanical work, and had a blast giving their teachers a lift. Many thanks to Sarah Olken, STEM Week Co-Chair, for organizing this activity and to the second grade teachers for their participation.

Burbank Gardens
Set for Spring!

We welcome the official start of spring this week, cheered by signs of spring in the school gardens! There are snowdrops and crocuses peeping bravely through the snow in the Garden Classroom (located between the building and playground), and garlic shoots in the Vegetable Garden (behind the school between the blacktop and staff parking lot). We hope you will take a few minutes with your child to look carefully around the gardens and see if you can spot these and other signs of spring. The gardens are always open to all!

The PTA Gardens Committee is planning for spring gardening activities. We surveyed the teachers and received positive and helpful feedback about garden-based learning activities for students. We are working with Dr Clifford and the teachers to plan garden activities for each grade that support specific curriculum topics and standards across various subject areas. The goal is for all students to experience hands-on learning in the school gardens, and to enjoy helping the gardens grow!

To make this possible, we will need the support of families like you! There will be many and various opportunities for parents/families to get involved and lend a hand this spring and summer. No expertise is needed! Please watch this newsletter and emails from your class room parents for easy ways to help, such as:

  • help tidy up the Burbank grounds and gardens on Spring Cleanup Day, Sunday May 7
  • assist with class learning activities in the gardens during the school day
  • help water the school gardens in spring (training provided)
  • come with your child/ren to be Garden Helpers for a short time before or after school - days/times TBD
  • sign up to tend the school gardens for one week during summer break (training provided)

Thanks for supporting the Burbank Gardens, and happy spring!

For more information please email a Gardens Committee member: Heather Barr, Kim Foster, or Harriet Wong.
