What's Happening This Week

Today, Tuesday March 7th, is Wilson Farm Shopping Day. Show the shopping day flyer at the store and Wilson Farm will donate 20% of your purchase to the Belmont Public Schools.

Thank you to all who supported the Adopt-a-Chromebook initiative - the community's quick response and your generosity were remarkable! We are pleased to announce that the drive was a success and that the PTA is in the process of purchasing 60 Chromebooks and two charging carts for the school. This is twice our original goal, and we are proud to provide this valuable resource to Burbank students and teachers. We look forward to reporting to the community how the Chromebooks are utilized in the coming months and years.

With gratitude,

Jessie and Katherine

Enriching Experiences at Burbank

Renaissonics Plays for Third Grade

This year the FBE supported the third grade music curriculum by funding the professional concert Renaissonics. Renaissonics is acknowledged as an innovative ensemble incorporating Renaissance musical practices with unique blends and performance of modern musical styles. This includes performances featuring the recorder -- one of the instruments studied in the 3rd grade music curriculum. When students experience a familiar instrument in a new and advanced context, there is great opportunity for personal and educational growth. We are so appreciative of teacher, parent, and community support to enrich our music program at Burbank!

Second Grade Meets Sled Dog Teddy & His Musher

Last month the second grade was treated to an exciting visit from John Kenney and his Siberian Husky, Teddy. Mr. Kenney is an experienced dog musher with forty years of experience who shares his experiences with all the Belmont Elementary Schools each year. In addition to introducing Teddy, Mr. Kenney demonstrates how his dog sled works. This visit enriches the 2nd grade unit on Alaska and the Iditarod Dog Sled Race. We thank Mr. Kenney for volunteering his time. He does not get paid, but asks for a donation to two local Siberian Husky Rescue organizations, to which the PTA generously contributes.

Origami Master Wows Third Grade

Last month, Burbank’s third grade classes were treated to a phenomenal origami instruction workshop, Origamido, by origami master Michael LaFosse. Mr. LaFosse is the author of more than 70 origami books and instructional videos and displays his origami masterpieces in art and academic institutes across the globe. Detailing how math and geometry skills are used in origami, Mr. LaFosse showed the students how to create boats and hearts – just in time for Valentine’s Day. Students spent much of their inside recess time that week (thanks to ALL the snow) creating origami art and each child returned home with many of their own pieces. This program, funded by the PTA for several years, is always a favorite among teachers and students.
