What's Happening This Week

Happy New Year, and welcome back to Burbank! We hope everyone had a nice holiday break.

Sign-ups for the Burbank Talent Show are scheduled to open at the end of the month and we very quickly must find several willing volunteers if the show is to happen this year. The Talent Show is is a wonderful night for our community to come together and support our students as they share their fabulous talents. See below for more details, and if you can help, please email burbanktalent@gmail.com.

Have a great week!

Help Needed for the Burbank Talent Show

Mark your calendars... the Burbank Talent show is coming April 7th, 2017! The Talent Show is a beloved Burbank event featuring 40 exciting and varied acts by students from all grades. To ensure that the show goes off without a hitch, we are in need of volunteers to assist with sign-up and rehearsals (see description of duties below). Please, if you can help, let us know ASAP. These positions must be filled before sign-up opens January 31st.

Sign-Up Co-Chair (1-2 volunteers):
- Announce and organize sign-up and collection of materials (waivers, mp3s)
- Communicate with parents and answer questions as needed
- Monitor sign-up process, particularly during the evening of Jan 31

Rehearsal Co-Chair (1-2 volunteers):
- Schedule and organize rehearsals and rehearsal schedule
- Communicate with parents about rehearsals
- Oversee the running of rehearsals, working closely with rehearsal volunteers

Contact Anne-Louise Klaus, Talent Show Coordinator at burbanktalent@gmail.com to volunteer or with questions.

Go Skating with your Burbank Friends!

Friday, January 20th
7:00-8:00 p.m.
Skip Viglirolo Skating Rink

Please join your Burbank friends for a fun night of skating! We have the rink to ourselves from 7-8 pm, but all are welcome to stay for public skate from 8-10 pm. Thanks to a generous donation from Dunkin' Donuts, we will have free hot chocolate. Be sure to bring your own skates - the rink does NOT rent skates. Helmets are recommended.

Please consider bringing a donation for the Belmont Food Pantry - there will be collection boxes set up when you arrive. The most needed items are: ground coffee, dish detergent, canned sweet corn, pasta sauce (in jars, not cans), rice pilaf, toothpaste, white canned tuna, and juice boxes.

Burbank Walks...
Even in the Winter

Over the winter we encourage families to walk to and from school as often as they can. The Walking School Buses are taking a break, but Burbank will celebrate a Winter Walk to School Day on Wednesday, February 1st.

Remind your children of these winter walking safety tips:
* Allow extra time for dressing and walking - snow can be such fun!
* Wear bright colors, or reflector strips on jackets/backpacks
* Wear boots with good grips
* Stay on the sidewalk, even if it has not yet been cleared
* Cross with a crossing guard, or at established crosswalks.

Stay warm and safe, and please drive slowly and carefully around the school!

Family Film Festival

Belmont World Film is holding its 2017 Family Film Festival - Where Books Come Alive! - January 13-16. Screenings take place at the Regent Theatre in Arlington, Studio Cinema and the Belmont Media Center in Belmont, and the Brattle Theat er in Cambridge. For movie listings, tickets and more information, please visit http://www.belmontworldfilm.org/

Belmont World Film (BWF), a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit corporation, promotes cross-cultural understanding through film screenings accompanied by discussions led by expert speakers, cultural performances, and ethnic cuisine. This format distinguishes BWF’s screenings of international feature films, documentaries, animation, and shorts from traditional film presentations. BWF began with the premise that foreign-language film can not only be a vehicle for hearing another language in action, but it can also foster an emotional understanding of other cultures.

Green Corner: Recycling Textiles in Belmont

Did your family receive new clothes or stuffed animals for the holidays and now you want to get rid of your old ones? Please don’t throw them in the trash! As long as textiles are clean and dry they can be donated and/or recycled. For recycling purposes don’t worry if they are worn, torn, permanently stained or missing a button or zipper. Some examples of textiles are: clothing, shoes, handbags, sheets, towels and draperies. A list of textiles that can be recycled is available here.

Below are some ways to recycle textiles:
- Drop off at DPW Recycle Days, held in May and October
- Call for a pick-up at your home from your favorite local charity
- Use textiles boxes located around town:
-- St. Vincent de Paul boxes behind St. Joseph’s Church via Orchard St.
-- Planet Aid boxes located on Lexington St, at Thayer Rd, or on Mill St. at Concord Ave

Any questions or suggestions, please contact Mary Beth Calnan, Belmont Recycling Coordinator at mcalnan@belmont-ma.gov or 617-993-2689.
