Geography Challenge

The Geography Challenge is fast approaching! This year’s Challenge will be held on Thursday, March 23rd, and Friday, March 24th, in the Burbank cafeteria. Registration is now closed.

Please note an important scheduling change from previous years. Due to increased enrollment throughout the school, the schedule for the Geography Challenge will be as follows:

Grades K-1: 9-9:50am, Thursday, March 23rd

Grade 2: 10-10:30am, Thursday, March 23rd (after the K-1 students depart)

Grades 3-4: 9-10am, Friday, March 24th

The Geography Challenge is a non-competitive display of students’ knowledge. As in past years, students form teams of 3 or 4 members and answer questions found in the Dr. Feinberg Geography Challenge Study Book, which will be distributed before the event. Students who participate will have the opportunity to learn basic geography facts and terms. Participation in the Geography Challenge tends to be high, with about two-thirds of all Burbank students electing to take part. The Geography Challenge is unique to Burbank - we are the only elementary school in Belmont that hosts this fun, educational activity. All students attend the Geography Challenge regardless of whether they are on a team.

Please see our FAQs about the event. Fun, teamwork, learning and enrichment are all part of the Geography Challenge! If you have any questions after reading the registration materials, please contact one of the Geography Challenge co-chairs. We hope that your child decides to participate this year.

SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL UPDATE

Following the Safe Routes to School informational meeting held on January 19th (agenda here), the PTA has formed a Safe Routes to School Committee to engage with town departments and community members for pedestrian safety awareness and infrastructure improvements.

As reported at the February PTA Meeting, the SRTS Committee is currently focused on working with Glenn Clancy, Director of Community Development/Planning, and the police traffic officers to advocate for a series of changes to improve safety at the crosswalk on School Street, including:

  • Reflective "Yield" sign in the crosswalk (already provided by police & DPW)
  • "Your speed is" detection & display signs on each approach to the 20mph school zone (to be installed in spring)
  • Curbing and sidewalk repair on both sides of School Street (pending capital budget approval, for installation by September)
  • Push-button activated flashing crosswalk alert sign system at crosswalk (pending capital budget approval, for installation by September)
  • Raised tables on straight sections of School St, to slow traffic approaching crosswalk (under consideration by town departments).

We are grateful for the collaborative response from the town departments, and for the support of Burbank families as we continue to make progress towards some infrastructure improvements.

How you can help:

  1. Call the town planning office at 617 993-2666 and convey your support for improved safety measures on School Street.
  2. If you are a Town Meeting member, or otherwise involved in the town's budgeting process, please look out for and support these capital budget items requested by the planning department.
  3. Join us! Get involved in a town-wide pedestrian safety campaign to raise awareness and advocate for changes to town planning policy.  Come to a meeting of the Belmont SRTS Working Group on Monday, February 27, 7pm at the Town Hall. Contact Mary Lewis <marydewhurstlewis@earthlink.net> for more info and to get on an email list.
  4. Stay aware and engaged! Many families turned out for the Winter Walk to School Day on February 1st, and many are displaying yard signs to remind drivers to drive and park carefully. Talk to your neighbors and friends and help keep others aware of safety needs and our shared responsibilities.
  5. If you live on School St or another busy street near Burbank and wish to display a "Slow Down!" yard sign, please contact Heather Barr <heather_a_barr@hotmail.com>.

Thanks for your support. Please contact a SRTS Committee member with questions, concerns, or suggestions.

The Burbank Parent Teacher Association

The Burbank PTA is comprised of parents, teachers, and Burbank’s school principal, all working together to enhance our children’s educational, social, and emotional development at Burbank.

The PTA hosts a wide range of activities throughout the school year including the Book Fair, the Fall Social, Reading Night, Field Day, STEM Week, Skating Night, the Multicultural Fair, the Geography Challenge, as well as many classroom enrichment programs in the school.

We invite new and returning Burbank families to attend our bi-monthly PTA meetings to learn more about the good works of the PTA and the educational and fun events that the PTA proudly sponsors. We encourage all families to contribute and get involved as together we foster a strong Burbank school community.

Volunteer! Join a committee or help at a PTA sponsored event

The Burbank Parent Teacher Association has two goals in mind when we plan events and activities. The first is to enrich the lives of Burbank students. The second goal is to help all families feel welcome, to feel connected to the school and to each other. Volunteering at school events helps parents build ties to other families and builds strong communities, while at the same time reinforcing the message to their children that school is valuable and important.

Throughout the school year, there are many ways for parents to volunteer at PTA-sponsored events, and volunteer opportunities are available for all levels of time commitment; during the school day or on evenings or weekends; and whether you want to take charge of organizing or just be handed a job to do.
