Burbank School Newsletter, September 7, 2018

Dear Burbank Families,

We made it! The modular classrooms look great, students are enjoying their new classrooms, and the school year is off to a wonderful start. The students are working hard, and seem to be enjoying their days back in school. I am very impressed with the high level of teaching and learning that is happening at the Burbank School.

On Friday, September 14th, the PTA will hold a Welcome Coffee in the library at 8:40 a.m., please join us if you can!

You should have received, The Burbank School Code of Behavior and Respect booklet which went home with all students the first day. This booklet outlines our core values at Burbank, along with rights and responsibilities that we all share at our school. I will be discussing these rights and responsibilities with students very soon, and I would ask parents and students if they have not done so to review this booklet and return the contract to their teacher. I would also like to remind families to review the Burbank Family Handbook which is posted on our school website.

I am really looking forward to seeing parents at our Curriculum Night on Monday, September 17th. This event is for parents only. The Curriculum Night schedule will be as follows:

Curriculum Night Schedule for Monday, September, 17th (6:30-8:15 p.m.)

6:30-7:15 Grades 3 and 4 curriculum in classrooms

7:30-8:15 Grades K, 1 and 2 curriculum in classrooms

7:00-7:45 Meet specialists (Art, Music, PE) in their classrooms

7:00-7:45 Support Staff available in the cafeteria

6:30-8:15 PTA Members will be in lobby outside the gym for general information

Enrollment is up at the Burbank School, we now have 417 students. It’s been really wonderful to meet all the new students; I’ve been able to talk with many of our new students. With increased volume around the school, it’s important to remember to be alert for students walking. If you drive your student to school, please remember that there is one rolling drop off area for parents to drive up and drop their child off, this is on Gale Rd. Sharpe Rd. is not a drop off area. Please do not drive into, or park in the staff parking lot between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. If you would like to park and walk your child to the school, please find a space to park on a side street. Thanks in advance for working together as a school community to ensure the safety of everyone.

Along with thinking about how to get to school, and where to drop off or park-I wanted to add a piece about arriving on time. Students can be dropped off at school at 8:25, and school officially starts at 8:40, when attendance is taken. This summer I read a great book entitled, “The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed”, by Jessica Lahey. In the book the author was explaining the best ways to build parent-teacher relations and in describing what it’s like for a child to arrive late, she puts this into terms that adults can relate to, when they are running late:

“Consider how well you would function if you woke up sleep deprived, then parked your car and ran straight into a presentation to the head of the company with no coffee, no time to take off your coat, no moment to take a deep breath and prepare for the day. Kids who rush into school at the last minute remain frazzled for much of the morning. Students who arrive on time-I mean early-and have an opportunity to take stock of the day are more prepared for class in terms of their materials and their emotional state.”

While I realize mornings are busy for families, having students arrive on time, throughout the entire school year-provides a better learning environment for everyone. As always thanks for your support, and helping us build this outstanding school community!

Sincerely,

Tricia Clifford, Ed.D
