Dear Burbank Families,
It’s hard to believe that we are already at this point in the school year. We only have a little over three weeks left! The weather hasn’t been too warm, so the classrooms have remained cool, and students’ focus has been on their work, and the many projects that are happening throughout the school.
On Wednesday, dismissal is at 11:40 a.m., as teachers will be involved in Professional Learning Team presentations at Burbank, and throughout Belmont.
This is a great time of year-what I notice most, is how much students have grown, and all the progress they’ve made since September. Thank you for sharing your children with us!

Wednesday May 30 will be an EARLY RELEASE day. All students will be dismissed from school at 11:40. No lunches will be served. BASEC will begin at 11:40. Wednesday will be a Friday schedule and Friday will be a Wednesday schedule for specialist classes.

Wednesday, June 20 is the last day of school. Please mark this date on your calendar. All students will be released from school at 11:40am. No lunches are served. There will be no BASEC program on the last day of school.

There will be two separate presentations for students to share classroom music curriculum. Students in grades 3 & 4 will not be allowed to attend the K, 1 & 2 performance and students in grades K, 1 & 2 will not be allowed to attend the grade 3 & 4 performance. Students will only be able to attend the assembly in which they are presenting. We look forward to sharing and making music with you!

Welcome to fifth grade at Chenery!
We would like to invite you to join us on May 30 at 6:30pm for our final Chenery PTO meeting of the 2017-2018 school year. This meeting offers a great opportunity to meet Chenery parents, PTO volunteers, teachers and administrators.
Our agenda includes:
- Presentations by Chenery Teachers on PLT work in the study of Cultural Competencies--an ongoing SEL focus at Chenery
- Superintendent John Phelan and BHSBC Member Jamie Shea with an update on the Belmont High School Building Project
- Introduction and approval of our PTO Executive Board and PTO Budget for 2018-2019

A Message for Grade 4 Parents/Guardians from Chenery Middle School:
Although Grade 5 probably seems a long way off, here at Chenery we are eagerly looking forward to your child’s entry into our school community! Class placement and school orientation are two of the most important things to you and your children during this time of transition, so we want to be certain that we are as thoughtful and thorough as possible. To that end, please take note of the following dates:
- Starting on Tuesday, May 1st and continuing through Thursday, May 31st we will make available “Placement Consideration Forms” at each elementary school main office. They are not required to be completed, but if you have any special circumstances you would like us to know about before assigning your child to a teacher and a team please submit one for your child. For the sake of convenience, all forms can be picked up and returned to the main office at your child’s elementary school.
- On Tuesday, June 5th @ 6:30-8:00pm in the Chenery Auditorium we will be hosting a special “Parent/Guardian Orientation” presentation for all incoming Grade 4 Parents/Guardians. We will provide a brief PowerPoint presentation, answer any questions, and then give a brief building tour of Grade 5 learning spaces. Please note that this is an adult-only event.
- During the week of Monday, June 4th through Friday, June 8th all Grade 4 classrooms will have the opportunity to come to Chenery Middle School for a “Student Orientation” and building tour. This opportunity will be arranged in conjunction with Grade 4 classroom teachers and Principals. Please note that this will occur during the school day and is a child-only event.

Students Who Are Tardy
School begins at 8:40am every day. Any student who arrives after 8:40am. is marked tardy. If your child is tardy it has an impact on the class when your child needs time to be part of the class after everything has started.
Coverage on the Black Top begins at 8:25am. Students can arrive any time after 8:25am. At 8:35am. the bell rings and children are brought into the building. If a child is tardy parents should bring the student to the office. Parents should not bring the tardy child to the classroom. When both a parent and a student arrive to a classroom late it only adds to the confusion. Please make every effort to get your child(ren) to school on time.
Extended Absences From School
Parents should know that students who miss more than 15 consecutive days of school without a medical exemption will be inactivated from the school roster. Parents will need to re-register once the child returns. We cannot guarantee that your child will be placed in Burbank. Placement will be determined by the numbers across town.
Drop Off and Pick Up Reminder
(This is an excerpt from the Burbank Family Handbook, which all families should review at the beginning of the school year-it can be found on the Burbank website)
There are potential problems when children get dropped off or picked up.
- Some children run across the street to get from the car to school or from school to the car. Make sure your child gets on the sidewalk and uses the crosswalk at Sharpe and at Gale Roads, and every street crossing.
- Cars should not stop in the middle of the road to pick up or drop off a child. This is very dangerous, backs up traffic and has potential for accidents.
- Double parking on Sharpe Road does not allow buses or other cars to get by and causes backups and potential accidents. Parking on the curve is illegal, as posted.
- Cars should not block stairs, ramp entrances, or crosswalks.
- Please do not park between the “No Parking” signs on Gale Rd. in the drop off area. This area is designated for parents to drop their students off, onto the sidewalk and then pull out without parking their car. This enables other parents to pull in and drop their children off too. It is also helpful if parents do not park on the opposite side of the street, as cars may tend to pull out into the road at the same time causing an accident.
No Dogs Allowed On School Grounds
The town by-law reads: “No dogs will be allowed under any circumstances in the following areas of town: all cemetery land, all public school playgrounds and athletic fields and all recreation department playgrounds and athletic fields.” At the Burbank School, the “playgrounds” include the area around the play structures and the entire blacktop area. In addition, we request that dogs be kept away from all entrances and pathways during morning arrival time, throughout the school day, and during afternoon dismissal time.
Burbank Modulars and Belmont High-School Project Update:

Wondering what to expect over the coming summer and fall with the Burbank Modular Project? What about the BHS Building Project with an upcoming citizens' vote in November? Join us on Thursday, May 31 at 8:45 a.m. in the Burbank Cafeteria (rescheduled from Tuesday, June 5 at 8:45 a.m. the Burbank Library) for a presentation by Superintendent John Phelan and Building Committee Representative Jamie Shea to get up to speed on these important topics.

Burbank Field Day is set for Thursday, June 7th (rain date, June 14th). There will be two sessions during the day - feel free to sign up for one or both sessions:
• 3rd and 4th Graders: 9:00am - 11:30am
• K, 1st, and 2nd Graders: 12:10pm - 2:40pm
