BURBANK SCHOOL NEWSLETTER: FRIDAY, August 22, 2017
We Strive for Love of Learning, Respect and Well Being
Dear Burbank Families,
On behalf of the Burbank staff, I’d like to welcome you to the 2017-18 school year. We’re anticipating an excellent year-full of learning and fun! We are all very excited to see new and returning students!
Throughout the summer, many staff members have been hard at work preparing for September 6th, the first day of school. Teachers have been setting up classrooms, attending workshops, taking courses, working on curriculum projects and enjoying some time with family and friends. Custodians have accomplished extensive cleaning and repairs throughout the school. In the main office, Mrs. Sacca has been taking care of mailings, new registrations, orders for supplies and instructional materials, and a wide range of other tasks.
A high level of parent involvement is a key aspect of the Burbank community. Our active PTA does much to support the school and has scheduled a number of events to bring us together. On behalf of the PTA, I’d like to invite all parents to the PTA Welcome Coffee in the library on Friday, September 15th, at 8:40 a.m., and to the first PTA meeting on Monday, September 25th, starting at 7:00 p.m., in the cafeteria.
Also, please mark your calendars for the Burbank Curriculum Night, on Monday September 18th, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., this is a great opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and learn more about what your child’s experience at Burbank will be like this school year.
The first day of School, September 6th, students in grades 1-4 will be dismissed at 1:40 p.m. No kindergarten students attend on the 6th. Kindergarten students either attend on Thursday, the 7th or Friday, the 8th until 11:40 a.m., with September 11th being their first day together, with a regular dismissal at 2:50 p.m.
On the first day of school children will be bringing home several pieces of information for you to look at and review including: The Burbank Code of Behavior and Respect booklet and contract, the Belmont Public School Calendar and Burbank’s Important Dates to Remember.
Also, please take a moment to review the Burbank Family Handbook which is posted on our website, http://www.belmont.k12.ma.us/burbank/mission/.
The Burbank Family Handbook outlines all of the important routines and information that will provide answers to common questions. All newsletters will be sent via the school listserv on Fridays, it’s very important to make sure that each Burbank family receives these newsletters as important information is shared. The first newsletter once the school year starts will be coming out on Friday, September 8th.
I hope to see you at the PTA welcome Coffee, the Curriculum Night, PTA meetings and other upcoming events. There will be many opportunities for parent involvement throughout the 2017-18 school year!
Tricia Clifford, Ed.D

When weather permits all children should meet on the black top at the rear of the school in the morning. When the weather is inclement children will enter the school through the rear doors and proceed to the cafeteria where they will be supervised until the bell rings at 8:35 a.m. Teachers will bring students to classrooms at 8:35 a.m. Please remind children to come to the main office if they are lost or confused.

Ms. Pellegrine and Ms. Talbot’s K classes are dismissed at the front and Mrs. Cox & Ms. Chalmer’s classes are dismissed by the playground.
School Nurse Hours
Mrs. Blake is our school nurse. Her hours at Burbank are from 8:25am.-3:00pm.
Health and Safety
We are taking steps for a healthier and safer environment for all our students. The number of students with life threatening allergies and medical issues is growing and we can take precautions that could benefit all children. In addition, sugared treats for class birthday celebrations and other class events may not benefit children's ability to focus and learn.
Therefore, we ask that you not send in food for celebrations of birthdays or other special days. Many parents in previous years have instead selected a game or book to give to the class. We no longer include food during classroom open houses.
On a daily basis, each child should have a healthy snack, provided from home. We ask children not to share snacks or lunch items with others. This ensures that your child eats only what you send, controls germs passed by hand and is a step toward protecting children with a range of allergies and medical issues. We will keep you informed and ask for your feedback as we explore ways to promote health and safety at Burbank.
Lunch/Recess Schedule – Cost of Lunch for Students - $2.50
Gr. 1 11:30-12:05 Gr. 2 12:30-1:05
Gr. 3 11:55-12:30 Gr. 4 12:55-1:30
Please provide your child with a healthy daily snack for morning breaks. Parents are welcome to have lunch with children any day. Just come to the office for a visitor badge.
Building Safety – Sign Ins
All visitors and volunteers should come directly to the office to sign in and get a badge. For safety reasons, we need to know about every adult who enters the building. During the school day the only door that can be entered is the front door. All other doors will be locked during school hours. When leaving, please sign out and return your badge. Staff members are encouraged to approach people they do not recognize or are not wearing badges to see if they need assistance or to ask them to explain their presence. This inquiry should be interpreted as a safety precaution.
Avoiding Classroom Disruptions
We need to make every effort not to interrupt instructional time. Therefore, parents or other visitors are asked to make appointments to see teachers rather than dropping by during the day. You are also asked to leave any items for delivery to children in the office. The principal or staff member will deliver lunches, instruments or other items to classrooms.
Phone Calls and Messages
We appreciate your understanding that all arrangements need to be made prior to coming to school. We are not able to deliver messages about after-school arrangements or changes, unless there is an emergency. We have only one school secretary and only 2 phone lines. Children are not allowed to have cell phones in school. Any emergency calls will be made for the child by someone in the office. Forgotten items are not considered emergencies.
Notes About Absence
If your child is going to be absent, tardy, or dismissed from school, you must call our attendance phone line (617-993-5502) and leave a message prior to the start of school (8:50am.). The number is printed on the back of the school calendar and posted on the BPS website. A call will be made to parents of any absent child who has not been “called in.”

School Parking Lot and Driveway
You can drop off and pick up children on Gale Road. Please do not park or block the bus parking area on Sharpe Rd.
The school parking lot is very small and crowded and it is almost impossible to turn your car around. Therefore, do not drive into the parking lot unless you need handicap parking. Please do not park in the staff parking lot between 8:00am – 3:00pm. Unfortunately, there is often not enough space for all the staff who travel between schools and come to Burbank throughout the day.
The driveway is the only access the Fire Department has to the rear of the school so there is no parking in the fire lanes. The chain, which closes off the rear playground, is a fire truck access, so cannot be blocked. The Police Department will ticket cars that block fire truck access. We all wish that we had more parking available.
Please be sure to carefully read the “Getting to School Safely” brochure that was enclosed with all the classroom assignment mailings sent out earlier in the summer.
The annual PTA Welcome Coffee will be held in the Burbank library on Friday, September 15 from 8:40 to 9:40 a.m. Come say hello, grab some coffee and have a bite to eat.
Family Social will be held in the cafeteria on Friday, September 22 at 6:00pm.
Please join us for the first PTA meeting of the year on Monday, September 25 in the Burbank cafeteria starting at 7:00pm. Greet old and new friends.
