Burbank Geography Detectives Program and World Geography Challenge
Geography has been selected as a school-wide theme because of its relevance at all grade levels and its importance to children's learning about their country and the world.
Geography Detectives is optional for all students, grades K-4. Questions appear each week in the Friday newsletter and are posted in classrooms earlier in the week. The deadline is the second day of the school week (usually Tuesdays). Most questions are composed by students, since the last question of the week asks students to provide a question and the answer. Parents may assist children in locating resources, but children should do the work to find the answers.
Each week, the principal personally gives geography detective certificates to children who answer the weekly questions. There are parent volunteers who assist with the Geography Detectives Program as well as Bulletin Boards and questions for the Special History projects.
In May, 1996 the first Burbank World Geography Bee took place involving Students in grades K-4. This is an annual event. Parent volunteer coordinators work with the principal on this non-competitive program involving student teams in grades K-4.
School Wide Assemblies
Burbank students at a given grade level are involved in assemblies at the school to honor local veterans on Veteran's Day or Memorial Day. Parents/guardians are always welcome. Assemblies for School programs, holidays, speakers, special events and other purposes are also held. Programs are scheduled at 9:00a.m. when possible.
