Belmont Public Schools News

Superintendent's November 17, 2017 Newsletter

11/17/2017

It is hard to believe Thanksgiving is less than a week away. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday, and enjoy the day and the long weekend. The Belmont High School football team will be playing on Thanksgiving Day at Watertown's Victory Field beginning at 10:15 a.m. Come and see the game before you settle into the big meal and cheer them on.

“A good head and good heart are always a formidable combination. But when you add to that a literate tongue or pen, then you have something very special.”
― Nelson Mandela

SCHOOL COMMITTEE

  • Belmont Teacher Contract Negotiations: I am happy to announce we have reached a tentative agreement with the Belmont Education Association (BEA) teacher contract. I want to thank Human Resources Director Mary Pederson and BEA President John Sullivan for all their work regarding this process.
  • Burbank Modulars Vote: Belmont Town Meeting voted positively at the Special Town Meeting held on November 13 for the funding of modulars at the Burbank. The goal is to have the modulars available at the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year. I would like to thank the Town Meeting Members and the Burbank community for supporting this step toward towards relieving the short term space challenges and class size issues that exist across our elementary schools.
  • Belmont High School Building Committee (BHSBC): The next BHSBC meeting, Community Meeting #5, will be held on Tuesday, December 12 at 7:00 p.m. at Belmont High School. We want to make sure we reach out to all community members, as this project has the potential for a K-12 realignment of grades depending on the grade configuration decided on for the project. The Committee welcomes your input as they continue to gather feedback from the community. For more information on the project, where to sign up for email updates, and the calendar page of events, please visit the Committee website at belmonthighschoolproject.org. In addition, the BHSBC has a Community Input Survey available on their website.
  • MCAS Presentation: You have already received the MCAS results for your child via U.S. mail. Assistant Superintendent Janice Darias presented the findings and how to interpret the new MCAS results at the School Committee meeting on November 14. Please see the presentation to the School Committee here.

The revised test that elementary and middle school students took last spring has new achievement levels, listed as Exceeding Expectations, Meeting Expectations, Partially Meeting Expectations or Not Meeting Expectations. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has stated the new test is more rigorous than it has been in the past, and the standards for achievement levels are also higher than in the past, which may result in a change from a student's achievement level. Please note that high school students did not take the new MCAS. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) says the new test will be introduced in the spring of 2019.

WELLINGTON ADMINISTRATIVE CHANGES

As you know, Principal Amy Spangler is retiring in December. Wellington Assistant Principal Annemarie Stewart has been named the Interim Principal of the Wellington School, and will begin in this role as of January 1, 2018. The permanent position of Principal of the Wellington Elementary School will be posted at the end of January, and a screening committee comprised of staff and parents will be formed after winter recess.

SCHOOL NEWS

  • Veterans at Burbank Veterans Day Exercises were at the Chenery Middle School and the Burbank and Wellington Elementary Schools on November 10. Local veterans, who represented several branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, were the guest stars at these school assemblies that had patriotic songs performed by students. VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS

Please see this announcement from Visual and Fine Arts Director Arto Asadoorian:

I am excited to announce that signups are open for the Grades 5 and 6 Theater Workshop at CMS. This is a weekly after-school activity that meets on Monday afternoons from 2:45 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The workshop will be run by Bill Stambaugh, who led the workshop last year with excellent results. If you have a 5th or 6th grader who is interested in theater, this is a great way to get them involved.

You can sign up for the Grades 5 and 6 Theater Workshop here. Participation in this activity does require payment of the $150 CMS After-School Activities Fee, which you can pay online here. The first session of the Grades 5 and 6 theater Workshop will take place on Monday, November 27.
If you have specific questions about the Theater Workshop, you can contact Mr. Stambaugh at wjstambaugh@gmail.com. And as always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about music, theater or visual art in our schools.
