Belmont Public Schools News

Superintendent's September 15, 2017 Newsletter

9/15/2017

The first week of school is completed, and our six schools have all reported a great start to the school year. Traffic is always tricky the first few weeks of September, with people going back to work coupled with the start of school. Despite that, school arrivals have been getting smoother with each passing day.

The administration welcomed back teachers and staff to the 2017-2018 school  year with a presentation in the high school auditorium on September 5 followed by teachers and staff going back to their school buildings for collaboration and preparation. The auditorium was filled with great energy, and it was wonderful to see returning and new staff gather.

Welcome to those who are new to the district, and are receiving this newsletter for the first time. The Superintendent's newsletter shares information from the Belmont Schools on a monthly basis, and although school has only been in session a few days, we are already busy with news and events. Here is to a great school year.

SCHOOL COMMITTEE

BHSBC Logo Belmont High School Building Committee (BHSBC): As you know, Belmont is working with the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) to develop and oversee improvements to Belmont High School. The three grade configurations under consideration for a new school are 7-12, 8-12, and 9-12. Invitations were sent out to parents and community members to volunteer for the next round of two-day Visioning Workshops with the Design Architect Team on September 19 and 20. Thank you to the over 70 community members and educators who have volunteered to take part.

This September workshop will build on the work started at last spring's Visioning sessions, where input was gathered on teaching and learning and how it might impact the design of the new building alongside the three possible grade configurations being considered. There will also be a community presentation about the High School Building Project on the evening of Tuesday, September 19, at 7:00 p.m., at the Chenery Middle School auditorium.

In addition to the Town of Belmont website for the project, there is a new website for staff, parents, and guardians to locate information on the beginnings of this project, community meeting information, FAQs and more. The website address is www.belmonthighschoolproject.org. Please see the following upcoming meetings for the community:

Tuesday, September 19th - 7:00 PM - Chenery Middle School
Friday, October 13th - 1:15 PM - Beech Street Center
Saturday, October 28th - 10:00 AM -  Belmont High School
Wednesday, November 15th - 7:30 PM – Town Hall
Tuesday, December 12th - 7:00 PM - Belmont High School

Chenery Chromebooks and Network Wiring: Thank you to the Capital Committee who approved the purchase of Chromebooks and network wiring at the Chenery Middle School. These are two major capital school items that will help to support teaching, learning, and online state testing, which in 2017 was a requirement for grades 4 and 8, and will in 2018 include grades 4,5,7 and 8.
