The FBE’s 2016 Annual Dan Scharfman Run Shines through the Clouds

Rain and cloudy weather didn’t stop 850 runners across New England from coming to Belmont to attend the 2016 Annual Dan Scharfman Memorial Run on Sunday, October 3. The Foundation for Belmont Education (FBE), the organizers of the event, said it was the largest number of runners to date.

The event netted more than $25,000, and the proceeds go towards the Dan Scharfman Education Innovation Fund, which is part of the FBE’s Innovative Teaching Initiative. The program helps prepare students for higher education and the 21st century workplace by allowing Belmont educators to acquire new teaching techniques and access innovative technology to enhance students learning experiences.

Dan Scharfman, who passed away suddenly in 2013, was an elected member of the Belmont School Committee and Belmont Town Meeting. A father of two, he was a tireless advocate for the Belmont Public Schools. Scharfman was an avid runner, marathoner and ultra marathon. In tribute to him, the Scharfman Memorial Run began four years ago.

The event took a village, with more than 100 volunteers who put in more than 275 hours to prepare and plan for the race, the many businesses who sponsored the race, and the help of the Belmont Police, Fire and Public Works department.
