Hundreds Run in the Annual Dan Scharfman Memorial Race

More than 750 runners from towns across New England participated in the third annual Dan Scharfman Memorial Race.  The runners signed up for a 5K or a 2K race through Belmont.  Participants of all ages ran, with the youngest 5K runner at age 6, Malachi Smith of Belmont, finishing with a time of 38:03.

Net proceeds from the race exceeded  $20,000 and go towards the Dan Scharfman Education Innovation Fund, part of the Foundation for Belmont Education’s (FBE) Innovative Teaching Initiative. This program enables Belmont’s educators to utilize new teaching techniques and leverage innovative technology to engage, motivate, and inspire students and better prepare them for higher education and the 21st century workplace.

The race began as a way to honor the memory of Dan Scharfman and reflect his passions and values. Scharfman, a father of two and an elected member of the Belmont School Committee and Belmont Town Meeting, was a tireless advocate for the Belmont Public Schools.  He passed away suddenly in January, 2013. In his free time, Scharfman was an avid runner, marathoner and ultra marathoner who could often be spotted out for a run around town.

Listed below are the races results, sponsors, and people and town departments the FBE would like to acknowledge for their help.
