| If you prefer to shop online, or have a student
who is attending a college that is far away from home, many
websites will pack and ship items directly to your student at
their college address. Always check with the college for their
shipping and address guidelines (some colleges have a special
summer delivery address). Many other students will be doing
the above so expect the pick-up point at the college to be quite
hectic. If the boxes are heavy (pick-up locations are never
near the dorm that your student has been assigned to), you may
want to bring a folding wheeled luggage carrier or borrow a
dolly if you can.
If you have some items that you will pack and are planning
to ship, consider calling your hotel and speaking with a staff
member to ask if they will allow you to ship the boxes directly
to the hotel. If the hotel will allow you to do so, this process
could be much easier than retrieving your packages from the
college's pick-up point.
The following websites may have helpful information:
Bed Bath & Beyond -
www.bedbathandbeyond.com - The College section of this
website has very good articles about going off to college,
including Survival 101 guides on a variety of topics for both
parents and students.
The
www.bankrate.com website has all kinds of information
about finances including best deals for credit cards for students.
A good article with all kinds of tips for "A Student's
Guide to Surviving College" is at
www.bankrate.com/att/news/special/20020816a.asp
RackRaisers - this product raises a bed off the floor so
that items can be stored under it. They are more expensive
than the ones that are sold at the linen supply stores but
they appear to be taller (there are two sizes - 20" and
25") so that more items will fit under the bed -

The Container Store website - www.containerstore.com - has
a section called "College Bound." Select "College
Bound" and find out about "The Dorm Room Basic Six"
and "The Inside Scoop" where the student's mission
is "to get prepared for college without driving yourself
(or your parents) crazy."
L.L. Bean -
www.llbean.com - great for backpacks and other travel
gear.
Smarter Living -
www.smarterliving.com - will send out announcements when
airfares go on sale. If you register with them, they will
send you weekly listings of weekend travel fares from a particular
city, listing all the airlines that serve that city. This
site also has hotel and car information and you can register
to receive their student, family, and/or frequent flyer newsletters.
