Policies
-------------------

The following is an example of our current academic policies which may serve as useful reference for parents and students. Families should refer to the Program of Studies or Student Handbook for more detailed academic policies.

Academic Warnings

At any time during the quarter, but usually mid-point, an academic warning will be sent home to the parents if the student is in danger of failing for the quarter. Parents should call to make appointments with their child's teacher(s) to discuss their child’s progress. In addition to the scheduled academic warnings, more frequent progress reports can be obtained by contacting the student's guidance counselor.

Advanced Placement (AP)

Admission to Advanced Placement and Honors Level courses is based upon proven achievement and ability as demonstrated by grades and/or test results. Teacher recommendations also weigh heavily upon this decision.

All students in Advanced Placement courses are expected to take AP examinations as the culminating activity in AP courses. Students who decide not to take AP examinations in particular courses will receive “honors” level designations, not AP designations, on their permanent record/transcripts for such courses.

Attendance

Belmont High School keeps accurate records of student attendance, and will communicate promptly and consistently with parents/guardians regarding attendance issues. This attendance policy is designed to foster a culture of learning at Belmont High School.

More about attendance policy read here.

Early Graduation

Early Graduation as an option is available to all students who are able to complete graduation requirements in a shorter time span than 4 years. This is an option which must be exercised judiciously with advanced planning and careful counseling. There must be formal authorization from parents in every case. Students are eligible for early graduation under the following conditions:

  • An Early Graduation Letter of Intent has been completed, signed, and filed with your guidance counselor by the end of the sophomore year.
  • All requirements for a high school diploma that are listed in this document have been completed.
Exams
Mid-year and final exams are given in all courses except by administrative waiver due to the uniqueness of content. Exams are worth 20% of the semester grade. Exams are given over a four-day period. Each exam is 90 minutes.

Honor Roll

To be considered for honor roll, students must be taking a full schedule and meet the following criteria. Determination of honor roll is based upon “term” (marking period) grades. Students with “Incomplete” grades are ineligible for honor roll.

  1. High Honors - All A's, B’s, and unweighted GPA = 3.7 in a minimum of five major courses.
  2. Honors - All A's, B's, and 1 C and unweighted GPA = 2.8 in a miminum of five major courses.
Promotion/Retention

Credit requirements for grade classification will be determined by the following criteria:

  • Freshmen - promotion from Grade 8
  • Sophomores - passing in 25 credits
  • Juniors - passing in 50 credits (and be able to meet course requirements for graduation)
  • Seniors - passing in 75 credits (and be able to meet course requirements for graduation)
